| @MikeN, All of the original states were slave holding at one time, and even at the start of the Civil War New Jersey was still a slave state and I believe Pennsylvania and a few other northeastern states had a few slaves left over as part of deals they cut when they abolished it. Besides that, both Maryland and Delaware stayed with the Union and voted against secession. And today I'd say that the two states are clearly connected to and part of the North, you could argue it both ways. At the least they're transition or border states if nothing else. |
