Shouldn't Porirua, Lower & Upper Hutt be seperated out from Wellington as these are seperate cities with their own councils. Could make the same point with Manukau & North Shore in Auckland.

Fair point @Heef, but distinctions like that make it unreasonably tougher for anyone quizzing from outside NZ. We have the same problem in UK where local government boundaries don't necessarily follow what people recognise as the boundaries of their cities and communities.

I find it no surprise that Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin are the four most known. As a Media student my analysis would be that we've all been trained subconsciously by the weather reporting on the news to recognise these four as the most important...
