As far as Greenland being a country or not being a country, the reason why this is even still debated is because of the misuse and blurring of the words 'country', 'nation' and 'state'. Greenland (along with Denmark and the Faroe Islands) is a constituent country of the Kingdom of Denmark, a sovereign state. So technically, yes, Greenland is a country, but in the way England or Scotland are countries. What most people mean when they say 'country' is 'sovereign state' which you can think of in terms of international representation. In the case of Greenland, all its international affairs are dealt with through the Kingdom of Denmark, so it is not a sovereign state. |
