Whew! That third column was a killer. This test is now the first in my own personal "With One Second Left" club. I plan to have my heart start again in a few minutes.

50% can do 18*16 in their head with how much time remaining? I doubt it... I'm still working on it...

20 * 16 = 320, then take away 2*16 = 32. Not a piece of cake certainly, but a lot more reasonable to me than trying to do the direct long multiplication in the head. Definitely a doozy of a third column!

My approach: I already knew that 17^2 is 289 (had to memorize that long ago for Algebra class). Since x^2-1=(x+1)(x-1), 16*18=289-1.

Funny how many approaches there are to that question. My approach was 15 * 18, which is 10 * 18 (180) plus half that (270), and then add 18 to get 288.

I just doubled 18 4 times over - 18, 36, 72, 144, 288. But kcostell I like your approach to it also - I wish I had spotted that.

The 48% slowed me down. I needed extra time so I hit the "Play Again" button to come up with 48% of 125. Great challenge, please do more.

What was up with 18? It was on there, like, every 2 seconds. 44 - 26 = 18. 3/8 of 48 = 18. 3/7 of 42 = 18. And the third column started with 18.

(18x10)+ (18x6). That's how I did it anyway. Got killed at 48% though; I mean, what.

As for the 18*16: I did 10*16 + 8*16. The 48% of 125 stole much more time.

Tip for 48% one - 1% of 125 is 1.25, x 2 = 2.5. 50% of 125 is 62.5, therefore 48% = 62.5 - 2.5 = 60. Tip for 18 x 16, I do, 10 x 18 = 180 + Half of that (5) = 270 and then + 18 = 288

For 48% of 125, I thought, "1/2 of 125 is 62.5. 48% would be, I dunno, a little less. So, um, 60? Right? Sweet!" This may or may not have been the most scientific way to go about it.

sickmission, now you're thinking like an engineer. 48% is a little less than half.

Ok, I know it's not popular to post your own time and I hate it when other people do it, but I just got to the end with one second left on the clock. Seriously, I'm pumped. I'm fired up. Time to put this adrenaline rush to good use at work today... or just do more quizzes.

18*16 - I did that one by going (18 * 4) * 4.
48% of 125 - I did that one by converting the percentage to a fraction, and doing 12/25 * 125 = 12*(125/25) = 12 * 5.

18*16: The previous column had 18*4=72, so I just did 72*4. || 48% of 125: Let's see, 1% is 1.25, so 4% is 5, times 12... cool, it worked. Though I prefer sickmission's method.

For the 48% of 125, I thought of it as multiplying 125 by (48/100), which, by cross cancellation, reduces to 5 x (48/4) (because you can divide 125 by 25 to get 5 and 100 by 25 to get 4). Then 48/4 is simple, 12, and 12 times 5 is also simple, 60.

I know 16^2 off the top of my head, and 16*2 is simple, so I just added those together. Agreed that 48% was much harder. I did that the same as @Aurora

for 18*16 I just add the four parts: 100 + 80 + 60 + 48. "Long" multiplication in your head isn't so bad with two-digit numbers.

I immediately thought of a quick way to do 48%, but unfortunately when I divided 125 in half in my head I somehow got 72.5

Try this: 125 is an eighth of 1000, 48 is 6 x 8, so 48% of 125 is the same as 6% of 1000 (divide and multiply by 8) or 60% of 100 (multiply and divide by 10), ie: 60. I find that if you see numbers as products of other numbers, rather than sums of other numbers, problems like this get easier.
Pedrocelli

Or try this: 125 is a quarter again of 100, and 48% of 100 is 48 (by definition), so a quarter again of 48 is 48 plus 12 = 60. If the numbers were different this approach might not work but we were given good numbers.
