Perhaps if I had bothered thinking about what NATO was an abbreviation for I wouldn't have gotten torpedoed by Australia...

It never ceases to amaze me that Albania, Poland, etc. are in NATO now ... all those time travelers from ca. 1958 who take this quiz have got to be thinking "What the hell?!?!"

All the founding states of the Warsaw Pact either don't exist now or joined NATO...I'm sure there's a lesson somewhere in there to be learned.

I just remembered which countries like the US and which ones have US military units, and guessed the rest.

Did this really need to be a minefield? I would have found it a lot more fun if it wasn't.

I know it sounds stupid, but I was seriously considering picking Australia when I spotted South Africa as well and because they are both ex-British colonies. But before I had the chance to be stupid and pick one, Sweden stopped me.

Classic example of a game that is a minefield just to increase the play count and get the attention of the Sporcle Admin.

I think the minefield was added for an element of danger. I didn't mind. Thanks for an informative quiz. Those tricky Swedes got me, too.

Current members of NATO isn't really 'History'. Seems there should be a new Sporcle category of 'Government & Politics'.

You know, when NATO includes countries like Turkey and Slovakia, they really shouldn't call it the _North Atlantic_ Treaty Organization. That name's just begging to trick unsuspecting Sporclers.

Also, it would be much less annoying if the entries were in aplhabetical order, so that I don't have to spend time looking for each country.

Pretty soon, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Montenegro, and Georgia are going to be on the list. I hope Ireland, Sweden, Austria, Finland, Cyprus, and Malta join, too.

@eab21: Switzerland was purposely created to act as a neutral country in international affairs. I'm pretty sure it would violate international law if it joined a military pact like NATO.

The existence of NATO is not conducive to World peace. I really wish they'd stop bombing other countries.

@Pedroia15 Well it's hardly surprising that after being Soviet colonies for so many decades they jumped right into the arms of the bloc that had been opposing them! I'm sure Georgia would love to do the same if it wouldn't start a war!

Got 27 correct. Not sure which one I missed though. Didn't fall for Sweden as they're always sitting on the fence aren't they?
