| Really though, math can be simple if you don't let the numbers frustrate or intimidate you...and it helps to know how to work the numbers. Like 3/7 of 56, just divide 56 by the denominator 7, which you should get quickly as 8, and then multiply that by the numerator 3, you get 24. If it's 20 percent of 245, you quickly double 245 to get 490, then move the decimal place in one to get 49, or you can divide 245 quickly by 10 to get 24.5, then double that (that's how I do it). Or 5/9 of 126, you can multiply 9 x 10 to get 90, knowing that leaves 36, and 9 goes into that 4 times, so you know 9 goes into 126 14 times, then times that by 5 and you get 70. Once you find your own shortcuts, then numbers can get easier. Also not used here, but I always like the half/double rule too. If you're ever multiplying 2 numbers, you can always half one and double the other. So if 15x18 looks intimidating to you, just double 15 and half 18, all of a sudden 30x9 should get you 270 much quicker in your head. Basically the key is to break numbers down into the 12x12 multiplication table we all memorized, then use simple addition, subtraction, multiplication and division from there. Didn't mean to ramble, just wanted to share for some of you that are mathematically challenged, many of you probably know these simple shortcuts already plus more, I know sporclers are intelligent. |
