| @jamcnam: You better advise the UN that Cyprus is not part of Asia so that can remove it from their Western Asia region. Wikipedia are also under the same misapprehension. The island is situated to the South East of Asia Minor. It is in close proximity to Anatolya (Asiatic Turkey), Syria and Lebanon. It is over 500km from mainland Europe as the crow flies and the crow would have to fly across Asia to get there. Yes it is part of the EU in same way that Reunion, Martinique, Guadeloupe, the Azores, Canaries, Madeira, Ceuta and Melilla all are and Greenland used to be. They are all located in other continents. Having the Euro as a currency is totally irrelevant. The Rouble is used in Vladivostok which is still many thousands of miles from Europe. I have some sympathy with British's contention that islands are not part of a continent. However, the terms European or Asian island are common and to that extent Cyprus is an Asian island. I do not agree with the contention that islands belong to a continent based on their political status. If one followed that logic then Bermuda, Anguilla, the Falklands, Diego Garcia, Pitcairn etc would be part of Europe which is obviously nonsense. Finally, whilst I accept that there is no "official" boundary of Europe, almost all geographers are in agreement that it is separated from Asia by the Mediterranean/Aegean/Dardanelles/Sea of Marmara/Bosporus/Black Sea/Greater Caucasus Mountains/Ural River and Ural Mountains. This leaves Cyprus in Asia by several hundred kilometres. |
