@Larryholmes: apparently no, you do not know best what is going on externally. You can do within the UK whatever you like, but in international relations, the UK is ONE country. Just like Spain, despite Catalunya, the Basque Country and I think Andalucia and Galicia as well having swathes of autonomy. And never call someone from any of these "Spanish"...
@futureboy: the separation of the "countries" of the UK in many (though by no means all) sports exists for historical reasons, especially since many of these originated in the UK and started as an internal competition. Actually, especially in football (soccer), more and more opposition comes to this, since it also grants the UK 4 votes. By the way: many countries have more than one team - Denmark has 2 and a half (Faroe Islands, Greenland) as an example.
@futureboy as well: it may be that this sounds harsh, but this issue has been discussed a thousand times or more already. And people start to get annoyed that some people do not understand the difference between a sovereign country (head of state, passport, foreign policy, army) and a national subdivision.
@cynicallynaive: Germany certainly has capitals for its second level subdivisions (Landkreise). |
