| Concerning the roman numerals after the names: Aragorn and Thorin are both members of royal houses, in which names tend to be repeated (think of Henrys in the British monarchy). I don't think hobbits have dynasties, but presumably Pippin has a grandfather, great-grandfather, or some more distant ancestor who shared the same name as his his father.
Gimli is definitely Gloin's son; I remember that mainly because of National Lampoon's LOTR spoof, "Bored of the Rings," which twisted "Gimli, son of Gloin" into "Gimlet, son of Groin". (What can I say? It was hilarious when I was in eighth grade.) |
