'Let us not deprive Molly any longer of the chance to deplore how thin you are.'
'You're a good boy,' said Professor Slughorn... And he, too, put his head on his arms, gave a deep sigh, and fell asleep.
Harry remained on the floor, hidden beneath the Cloak, his mind racing.
And taking care to tread on Harry's fingers, Malfoy left the compartment.
'Just stick to Malfoy like a couple of wart plasters.'
His hand closed around the fake Horcrux, but... in spite of the final meeting with Voldemort he knew must come, ...there was still one last day of peace left with Ron and Hermione.
Some people, perhaps, would say that there was little to choose between the two ways, but Dumbledore knew... that there was all the difference in the world.
Harry thought he heard a sob before it slammed.
'You see, we have never been able to keep a Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher for longer than a year since I refused the post to Lord Voldemort.'
Bellatrix's... face glowed red in the blaze of a third tongue of flame, which... twisted with the others and bound itself thickly around their clasped hands, a fiery snake.
'I wouldn't expect you to, Phineas,' said Dumbledore, and Fawkes gave another low, musical cry.
'Thanks a lot, Demelza.'
Harry turned. At once, ...he was standing in cool darkness, breathing in lungfuls of fresh, salty air.
A long walk in the grounds seemed indicated, during which - if they had time - they might discuss the match.
Harry's scream of horror never left him; ...Dumbledore... fell slowly backwards, like a great rag doll, over the battlements and out of sight.
This book is the property of the Half-Blood Prince.
Once inside the shop, Harry... joined in with the other two when they insisted... that they had been in the back room all along, and that she could not have looked properly.
...Wouldn't he be living up the the prophecy, and giving himself the best chance of survival, if he joined those highly trained wizards whose job it was to find and kill Voldemort?
'And now, Harry, let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.'
'Goodnight, sir.'
Harry crumpled the parchment in his hand and his eyes burned with tears as behind him, Fang began to howl.
Ron gave a great shudder, a rattling gasp and his body became limp and still.
And with that, the two wizards stepped one after the other into the bright green fire and vanished.
'I am with you.'
And he knew, without knowing how he knew it, that the phoenix had... left Hogwarts for good, just as Dumbledore had left the school, had left the world... had left Harry.
And on that enigmatic note, he waved to Harry, who understood himself to be dismissed.
'But since when has Malfoy been one of the world's greatest thinkers?' asked Harry. Neither Ron nor Hermione answered him.
Ron scowled.
Harry shook his head again. Exactly what Hagrid would say when he realised his three favourite students had given up his subject, he did not like to think.
'Yeah, I am,' said Harry. 'Glad we straightened that out.' And turning his back on the Minister for Magic, he strode back towards the house.
