Great Editor's Pick! Pretty bummed that Randy isn't on there! My next son will definitely be named Francisco.

Is it 2000s or a specific year? I'm not clear, but it'd be helpful if it were a given year.

@lylyness: If you look at the top of the page, you will see where it says "Can you name the most popular baby names of the
2000s
by their first letter?" So, yes, there is a year.

It would be great if you could list each name's rank as an extra hint column. I'd like to know how many Franciscos there are.

@mswn: According to my source there are 26,451 Franciscos.

I just don't look forward to knowing people in the future who go by these names. Come on, Destiny? (Great quiz, though!)

Some of these seem to me to be 90s holdovers...I have lots of students with these names, and all my students were born in the 90s.

What's funny are the amount of biblical names and the boys side and the amount of names on the girls side which sound like strippers. Pretty names nonetheless, but still...

zalkon2004, my thoughts exactly. I'd love to see one of their weddings: "Do you, Ezekiel Jacob Daniel take Destiny Brianna Chlamydia to be your wife?" Actually, having three sons born in this decade, I am ashamed I did so poorly. Especially with Hannah--one son had three in his third grade class of 24 students, plus two more in other classes of the same grade at his school. And one son has three Lukes on his baseball team of 11, but that's not even tops for L's. Yikes.

There really are some horrendous names in that list. And a question, why do so many Americans have surnames for first names (Brandon, Taylor, Hunter etc)? What's wrong with regular first names? How does Tyler beat Thomas?

Pluses and minuses to "Drunk Sporcling". Sober me might have come up with Daniel and/or Tyler. But it probably wouldn't have gotten "Destiny".

@TessSGS: It was commonplace in 19th century America to carry a surname as one's middle name. A famous case of how U.S. Grant came to be named is the result of his application to West Point being hastily forwarded by a congressman whose term was to expire the next day. The congressman carelessly assumed Ulysses' middle name was Simpson, his mother's maiden name. It became an official document once Grant entered the academy, and the rest is history. Happy Mother's Day!

I have a hard time believing some of these names are the most popular over an entire decade. Francisco? Destiny? Are there really more Chloes than Charlottes, Catherines, Carolines or Claires? Hard to believe.

This quiz is pretty similar to one I've already had on the front page, but it compares 2009 names to 1970 names.
http://www.sporcle.com/games/rockgolf/The_SSA_is_ass_backwards and the only letter I couldn't find was Q for girls in 1970.

Hunter's the sort of name you give to an alsatian or a rottweiler, not your two day old baby.

Wow! This was really hard. I would have never gotten some of these. The boys names make it seem as if the mafia is probably a little more prevelant than we give them credit for! "Hey! These are my brothers Nicky and Mikey! And my uncle Vic... and my cousins Sammy and Danny... and I want you to meet Patty, he is a "friend" of the family."

Congrats on the publication, @RaysRule2010! :) It would be neat if a third column told us the raw numbers for each, or maybe even the next most common once you get it right.

@dirtbag I would have needed more than 20 minutes, but then again it didn't say it was USA names, so typing in James, Jack, John and getting nothing I gave up as I knew I would have no chance guessing what the names could be.

Yayyy!! I was up there (Emily), but I only got 7 lol... Francisco??? seriously??? No Frank??? Oh yeah I forgot this is America, not like you'd have an AMERICAN name as number 1 lol... (This wasn't meant to be anything against the Spanish/Mexican immigrants, just seems odd, theirs more of them than us)

You notice how many American names are after virtues they'd like their children to have. Like Charity, Hope, Destiny, Faith, Grace, and stuff like that. In the words of Adam Hills, can you imagine if the Aussies did that? These are my opening batsmen, good bloke and opening batsman...
