| "As much as people gripe on religion (as if most people who start wars on the grounds of religion actually do it for religious reasons and not wanting more power or land) its loss was devastating to the Soviet Union in so many ways."
Sorry but your logic is faulty. If religion's value (as you imply) is that it keeps people from killing themselves, that's no value at all to anyone who puts a premium on truth and real objective purpose. Someone who kills himself because he thinks the universe and his life are meaningless, and that there is no God, what good is religion to him? Yes he may live if he's made to believe in God, but that won't change whether or not there is a God - his life would be saved, but would still be as objectively meaningless as he found it w/o God. I understand the William James argument, but for people whose souls want truth, who cannot lie to themselves even if telling the truth means annihilation, religion, or at least the Abrahamaic religions, will not do. And if they kill themselves, it's on you to explain why that's actually, ultimately, any more tragic a thing than their continuing to live in a meaningless universe where they would suffer. |
