Overall survival rate was 38%; 62% of first-class passengers, 42% of second-class passengers and 25% of third-class passengers. I can't believe I have to add this, but the crew were not passengers.

Great to see you making quizzes again, PumpkinBomb!
This is a good quiz. Just one question "No Kyrgyzstan?"

Great quiz idea, but weren't there over 2,000 passengers on the Titanic? This can't possible account for all of them.

yes, there were 2,227 passengers and crew, and 1,517 died. Where are the others? The vast majority would have been from UK (which at the time included Ireland), and the USA

The Titanic also had some dining staff, but it was serviced by a company separate from the White Star Line, so the dining staff was technically neither crew nor passenger. If I remember correctly, only one survived.

@shiNKorea - What are you talking about? Based on the statistics above, out of 90 Asian people on board (ignoring the possibilities surrounding Russia and Turkey - each at 33%) only about 38 survived. What are you celebrating?

One of the seven Spanish passengers was Ramón Artagaveytía, who had survived the sinking of the ship América in 1871, between Buenos Aires and Montevideo (65 survived, 141 died). Before embarking in the Titanic, he commented "Fortunately, thanks to the wireless telegraph, ships are much safer now than 40 years ago". Needless to say, he died.

Superb quiz. Definitely worthy of being published. Looking at the statistics on that site it's also interesting to see the different survival rates based on class, gender and age. Second-class children (100%), first-class women (97%) and first-class children and second-class women (both 86%) had the highest survival rates. Second-class men (8%) and third-class men (13%) had the lowest survival rates. Most third-class women and children perished. Nevertheless more third-class women (49%) survived than first-class men (34%).

Among the dozens of mistakes, goofs and anachronisms in the film "Titanic", the world map that appears on the wall of the radio room is a map of the 1990s (when the movie was made). The director didn't bother to get a map of 1912 (showing the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian empires, etc.), probably because he thought "But how many among the spectators will notice the difference between a present-day map and one of 1912?" Well, most Sporcle members can, for example.

A friend once told me her grandmother had a ticket to the Titanic. However, she was too late that day and missed its departure.

It's always interesting to see stats like this. The crew would probably not alter the order much, as I guess most were British or American; neither would the hundreds of workers from Southampton still completing the ship when it set sail.

Surely these *aren't* modern countries. "Austria-Hungary," at least, would include many people from countries other than modern Austria and Hungary, particularly if they were mostly Slavs.

An interesting Titanic fact I heard (from the UK tv show 'QI') is that the White Star Line's contracts stated that, at the time of a sinking, the ship was no longer legally a ship, and so the crew could not legally be called crew, so all their wages stopped the moment the ship stopped being sea-worthy. Pretty rough deal!

@cuendillar: Reminds me of my friend's father, who had a meeting at the WTC on 9/11, and stopped at Dunkin' Donuts because he was early. Of course, that made him late.

Good quiz, definitely original. I really feel bad for those Bulgarians, though. It does seem very suspicious that all 33 of them perished. Maybe the iceberg was racist!

Here's the Wikipedia page indicating that there were 2240 passengers and over 800 crew members, bringing the grand total to over 3000 people: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titanic#Maiden_voyage . Each number has linked sources to back them up.

Montenegro was not part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1912; neither was Roumania. I should have looked at the title question on my first of many tries at this quiz (2 minutes is way too short), but you need to be consistent. Finland (like Poland) was really part of the Russian Empire, and Ireland part of the UK of GB & Ireland. Were there no Poles on the Titanic? Or Ukrainians or Armenians? As pointed out above, Syria like Lebanon and Palestine was part of the Ottoman Empire. So either give 2011 states or 1912 ones, but please be consistent. Montenegro and Romania were independent in both years.

Why spoaclers consistently mark down any attempts at humour is beyond me. What ive written above are both printed on tshirts that tourists often buy in Belfast which is where the Titanic was built. Both statements are also true. Lighten up people! Mark me up ...... or are you taking yourself too seriously today ;-0
