I don't mean to be a party pooper, but these were among the worst books I've ever read, especially 5-7. The Gunslinger was pretty good. If you're looking for a good fantasy series check out George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire. Its being made into an HBO series as well.

Incredible books. Maybe make the Little Sisters of Eluria a bonus answer?

Love this series... first few books were the best (especially the parts with the monorail) but great overall.

If they made a movie, who plays the gunslinger, until a time machine is built to bring back a circa Good Bad and Ugly version of Clint Eastwood?

That's the sad fact, Eastwood is the only one that could have pulled off the role of Roland

never read these books, but I am aware of them, word is that Darlton may do a film adaptation when they are done with LOST.

Great quiz. This series is story-telling at its best, tying together nearly all of King's work.

@bstarr66 - If you hated the books so much, why in the hell would you read the entire series of 2,000-3,000 pages?

@Brian I agreed to read the series with a friend. Plus once I start reading something I can't stop no matter how painful it is, I'm sure you know how that is. I can't believe I'm the only one who was disappointed with this series, especially books 5-7.

This is a series I re-read every year, there are a few bits that are not his best work, especially in the middle, but in my opinion, this series has the best ending ever..... it's a bit marmite tho', you either love it or you hate it!

As much as I love this series, I just don't see how anyone (even JJ Abrams) could do them justice in film.

@bstarr I think the last couple of books did drag a bit, but the ending made up for it all.

Okay, I'll weigh in too. As far as the film adaptations, I've often felt that this series would do well animated. As far as the ending..., well, to avoid spoilers, let's just say Stephan King made the same mistake that M. Night Shayamalan made with "Lady In The Water." Specifically, his casting, not like, you know, everything else he did wrong.

according to stephenking.com, he has an idea for a new book, entitled "Wind Through the Keyhole". AWESOME.
