@TheFlyingBarney: You understood wrongly. Macedonia prefers to just be called this. The "FYROM" is a construction preferred by Greece, Cyprus and to a lesser extent Bulgaria, since the traditional region of "Makedon" is not the same as today's country. Since Greece insisted, the name FYROM is officially used by some international organizations (Eurovision Song Contest probably is the most obvious, though by no means most important example). But the government of said country is appalled by the usage, far from insisting on it - the general feel is best summed up by the campaign "Don't you FYROM me".
As for "official names": Sporcle standard is to use only shorthand anyway, DRC and RepCongo are exceptions for clarification purposes only. And Ireland really is only "Ireland", no "Republic of" in the name at all. |
