One of the misleading ones is Washington. While DC itself has shrunk, the immediate suburban counties of Maryland and Virginia have exploded. As a consequence, DC is now on the increase again.

gowhere: That's the same for most of the cities on the list. The suburban areas of Detroit, Boston, Chicago, Minneapolis have all grown in the past 50 years, but the central city has shrunk. The mass exodeus to the 'burbs.
