How on earth is Sydney smaller than Melbourne?

I wanted to use the same source as the Africa's/Asia's/Europe's/etc. largest quizzes. Australia's 2001 census still had Sydney as largest city. Nigeria's 1991 census had Kano as second largest. As for Caracas, the 1990 census had it as largest city. You see the problem? To be able to compare the population numbers with some significance, I had to use the calculations instead of the censuses.

Maybe I should change the source to City Mayors' 2006 metro area list. This is a common source on Sporcle too, and the answers are a bit more realistic.

Excellent idea! Are you planning on doing third cities, or does that end up being too obscure?

You seem to have missed Pusan/Busan. Most likely due to Seoul being listed as lying in South Korea and Pusan in Republic of Korea on your list.

Can you show the country prompt in the third column? Without it, we're just guessing cities at random.

Ah, well spotted Fantonald, that was exactly the reason. I just added it. @segacs: Now, that would make it a bit too easy for my taste.

I'm pretty sure both Rome and Milan have over 3.3 million in their urban areas, though maybe they didn't in 2006.

Great game, but why do you refer to "urban area" in the question, but in the game you refer to "population in millions"?

I don't see how that's wrong. The column represents the population of the urban area, in millions.

If Frankfurt am Main and Wiesbaden is an urban area, then the entire Ruhrpott is one as well. That makes Berlin the correct answer.

It seems to me that Rome and Milan vie for first and second city status in Italy - usually Milan is named first for population of urban area.

I understand the whole "urban area" concept when counting population, but to have Berlin as the second most populous CITY in Germany, when it is the biggest in that country by some distance, undermines the entire quiz in my eyes. Good quiz otherwise.

Maybe change the title to "largest metros" or "largest urban areas" or "largest urban agglomerations"

It's a bit of a stretch to consider the Los Angeles CSA an urban area, no? It's significantly less dense than all of India! Not that much would change, but LA's urban area is around 15 million, not 18. Of course I realize you're just going with the source, though. I do enjoy this quiz. I guess this is just a personal gripe with CSAs in general being used as metro or urban areas.

You should make one for third or even fourth cities. I think it'd be really tough but enjoyable nonetheless.

Isn't Shanghai more populous than Beijing? Same with India... thought Mumbai was #1 and I also could have sworn Busan is more populous than Seoul.

Check the source - this quiz uses agglomeration populations, which places Guangzhou at #1 for China, although you're right that Shanghai is the most populous city by city limits. Never heard that Busan is more populous than Seoul though.

I almost always find myself disliking quizzes such as this due to the source's apparently arbitrary definition of an 'urban area'. In order to claim that Berlin is not the largest city in Germany, you'd have to count what are really several different cities under the same umbrella. You might as well label the entire east coast of the US as an 'urban area' and include the populations of Boston, New York, Washington and wherever else you felt like.

Note to self: next time you take a quiz like this, go ahead and try what you ASSUME to be the largest city, just in case. At least two misses because of that. D'oh!

The population of a city should only count the population within its city limits, that of unincorporated surrounding areas, and MINOR cities in its metro area. A rule of thumb: the population of any well-known city should NOT be added to any other as a part of that other city's metro population (as was done with Japan, and what was done to Hamburg to make it bigger than Berlin despite the fact that the population within Hamburg's city limits is about half that of Berlin's).

Over the course of this quiz, I complained to myself that Nigeria, Indonesia, Turkey, Bangladesh, and Saudi Arabia only had one big city, and I expressed surprise that Milan didn't make the cut. Sigh.

The problem with this quiz, is the questionable source being used. There is no way shape or form that Hamburg is bigger than Berlin, unless you use this single method that the guy that wrote the quiz found. Its much easier, and much more fair, to just use actual city populations.

Yeah yeah...the point still remains the same. Sheesh the Ruhr region is, in no way shape or form, a city. It has cities IN it, but its ridiculous to make it into a city. It makes the quiz confusing in an unneeded way.

Good quiz, but a) I agree with bobman1 that there were some spoofers thrown in (e.g. Shanghai), and b) where the hell is Birmingham (u.k.)? I am sure that the West Midlands conurbation has a population of at least three million.

Yeah, I tried 6 or 7 different German cities - to no avail. I knew that Pakistan and Bangladesh were going to be on the list, but I couldn't come up with either correct answer. I also missed Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, and Indonesia.

Just a heads up: if this quiz had used city limits instead of urban areas, some of you would have complained about the inclusion of Khartoum, Sudan or Ecatepec, Mexico or Manila, Philippines. All definitions and sources have their downsides.
