Great quiz! What other city is keeping Kinshasa off of this list?

Brazzaville - it's actually just on the other size of the Congo river. In general, when you're interested in knowing why some cities don't make it, take a look at City Population's interactive world agglomerations map. I found it very interesting while preparing this quiz.

Awesome quiz, and kudos for including so many "near misses" as bonuses! Might it be worth including Kinshasa/Brazzaville as one of those, perhaps? in some sense I'd feel they belong on the quiz, since if it weren't for the national border going through the middle, they'd almost certainly be considered the same metro area...

I'm curious why Santiago is a bonus answer.

I too am curious why Santiago is a bonus. I have been to Valparaiso and it isnt that big (including surroundings). Santiago is 600+ KM from Cordoba Argentina.

I believe you right away, it's just that I can't simply leave out something that the source says (namely, that the Valparaiso metro area has 1,100,000). Therefore, it's a bonus answer instead.

Good quiz, but I think ordering it the other way around would be more interesting - i.e., name the most isolated cities, rather than ordering it by size

@Purpurra: There's at least one more bonus answer. I got Salt Lake City. Mainly because I started guessing the towns that popped up for the few right answers I got.

Surprisingly hard, though using the closest cities displayed helped a bit. Loved the bonus answers! Maybe add one for Moscow? Because that really surprised me.

Another great quiz from one of my favorite contributers, thanks. Fun fact: Ürümqi is the world's furthest inland (major) city, a.k.a. the one closest to the Continental Pole of Inaccessibility. That basically makes it awesome.

Very tough. Some things I thought were good guesses (Reykjavik) were way off the mark. Denver surprises me the most.

@deej: I considered that option, but if you take the top 20 metro areas that way (more than 700 km) it includes Manaus, Makasar, Mbuji-Mayi, Mashhad and Merida - I thought that was just too many difficult M Metros...

@lukebradford : one of the many astonishing things about Iceland is that the whole country is only 320,000 people of whom two thirds live in and around Reykjavik
