Many of these are shockingly surprising--Cal hasn't been but Stanford has, Georgia Tech hasn't been but Maryland has, Michigan State hasn't been but Purdue has... Good quiz though.

Not really that surprising when you think of the long term and not the past 3 seasons.

There's enough time to just name every team in each of these conferences, I think. I like the idea.

Some schools just get lucky with the players they have. Purdue made their BCS game when they had Drew Brees at QB, Michigan State has never had anyone as talented as him at their helm. And so on.

tricky quiz. northwestern (1996) and arizona state (1987) were in the rose bowl before it was a "BCS" bowl game.

Hard to believe that at any point in time, Syracuse actually had something going on up there.

It's not that tricky. As for this list, I haven't looked at the standings in awhile, but I think of this group, only Ga. Tech seems at all likely to break thru this year.

@Barzuniac We'll see about GT. We have Duke this weekend and our defense still worries me against the pass. Plus, there is still the ACC title game which Clemson or Boston College could appear in. But if they go, it just hurts the BCS that much more.
You have to remember that the BCS started in 98. But still to think Syracuse had something is surprising.

the Orange lost 31-10 in the '99 Orange Bowl. I think McNabb was the QB?

Don't discount Syracuse football. They also produced Larry Csonka and Art Monk. More importantly though, the greatest RB ever in Jim Brown and probably the greatest TE ever in John Mackey.

tscheno - yes, and it wasn't even as close as the score would indicate. I was at the game and it was a blowout in every sense of the word.

don't forget Ernie Davis at Syracuse as well. But Kellen Winslow was the greatest TE ever, sorry.

So what year was Wake Forest in the BCS game? I hate quizzes where you waste your time on one answer.

Syracuse is a traditional power; I think what GPB was referring to was their recent suckiness. But of course immediately before that, they had Donovan McNabb.
