They are part of the Channel Islands, which is somewhat autonomous and also somewhat dependent on the UK. Every map in every atlas I've ever looked at has "UK" in parentheses when referring to Jersey, Guernsey, or any of the other myriad "dependencies" the UK claims. I don't know all the details, but just like Puerto Rico's relationship with the U.S., there has got to be some affiliation between Jersey and the British Crown (defense, currency, voting, GDP/GNP, etc.) Otherwise, there would be no need for the parenthetical reference on maps and globes. |
