Arbitrarychoice came up with this concept, his quizzes (Russia, United States and Australia) are here: http://www.sporcle.com/user/arbitrarychoice/contributed I've before done Straight Line from Italy, which is located here: http://www.sporcle.com/games/NorwegianSalmon/straightfromitaly

Campbell Island is such a sneaky little thing, isn't it?

Actually, Auckland Island can also be hit straight from Iran, and is insignificantly closer. I too was greatly surprised :p

Pretty cool. I had to look at a globe before I believed New Zealand.

Wow, it comes awfully close to hitting Socotra, Yemen, but there is an Omani island just in the way.

There's also a direct line (great circle) to Mayotte, which became an integral part of France earlier this year.

Cuendillar, you're right. Also Reunion. Moved from bonuses to proper answers.

@kennyb: That Omani island (Masirah Island) also prevents mainland Africa from appearing. If that island weren't there, we would be able to just barely squeeze around the tip of Socotra and get to Mozambique.

I think these quizzes would be more interesting if one allowed non-shortest great circle routes too. That seems to better fit the bill of "can be reached in a straight line from". I think that would add Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua to this one, which I certainly wouldn't expect.

@kkarl - I agree. The problem is that I could find no way to measure it (the neat tool in the source doesn't allow this). But if you work out a way to do it, tell me :)
