@NJSB: I get that; and it's great that you want to look after the players and give them a chance... But I'll still "gently" suggest that "incorrect spelling" is no different from "incorrect answer". Sure, a player who is not a Classical Music fan may miss a few, as a result; but as this is a knowledge test, shouldn't the "experts" be rewarded for knowing how to spell the answers?
And, I'll playfully poke ya, and speak to you as the the three-day-Jeopardy-champ: Would Alex Trebek have accepted a misspelled answer for a column where the correct answer is the word "as it is spelled"? Or a mispronounced word which is different from a correct answer (Such as saying "dessert" when the answer is "desert")?
It's your game to design as you wish, but in my opinion, an important component of the "best" games in Sporcle is accuracy, in ANY regard. As I consider you to be one of Sporcle's best "new" game contributors (that's a compliment to ya, by the way), I just want to encourage you to keep your standards high. Try misspelling a country in any of the highest-rated (or most-played) published games, and see what happens.
If you still decide that you've gotta help players with spelling, you could, instead, create "wrong-answer-hints" such as "Very close - check your spelling" for when a player gets the first few letters but misses a tricky spelling element while trying to complete the word. (By the way, there is also an additional problem that YOU create, if you accept "just the first few letters" when they have spelled it correctly "so far"... Everyone who continues to type in the remainder of the word will end up with the remaining letters in the "enter answer" box, and now have to backspace and delete them. Most people type too quickly to notice "hey! it already accepted the answer half-way through typing it in!" and begin to type in the next answer -- which is not accepted -- and they realize it's because those few letters were still in the entry box. |
