Great quiz. I had to look up what the Demographia third from the bottom one was! 5/5

agreed, brilliant quiz, good appreciation on the disparity between potential source material. although i think you could bring the time limit down as in fact a lot of the answers are duplicates (so less distinct answers then one might think). got almost all my answers in the first 5 mins and gave up after 6...

Brilliant quiz. Really highlights how the different sources may have wildly different answers, which has been a big nuisance here on sporcle.

Great quiz! As for the disparity with the different sources...what's a few million people between friends? :)

Excellent. I like how the lists have *seven* different second- and third-place countries between them. You do have one typo: "Los Angles" in the UN list...

We mustn't forget that the majority of figures are statistical estimates. Some countries are taking their censuses this year (USA, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina) or the next (UK). So the figures that we see are mostly extrapolations from censuses taken 10 years ago. Probably in 1 or 2 years we'll have more accurate, actual data.

considering new delhi has about 300,000 people and delhi proper has 12 million, this would be like asking that you accept "beverly hills" for los angeles. "new delhi" is a separate entity from delhi proper. new delhi is just part of the delhi metro area, but is far smaller than delhi itself.

i'm really interested to know how guangzhou was counted to have 24 million by citypopulation, but didn't even make the list by the united nations.

Darcy, my guess is that Guangzhou is considered the main city in the pearl river delta, and the figure of 24 million might include the majority of this area including maybe Guangzhou (10.04M), Dongguan (6.86M) and Foshan (6.74M). The entire pearl river delta has a population of over 50M which also includes Shenzhen (8.47M), Hong Kong (7.00M) and Jiangmen (4.12M).

amazing how it highlights ridiculous differences in source information... for example: in citypopulation.de says that seoul's population is 24.2 million, but united nations says that seoul is only 9.77! epic difference... not to mention guangzhou doesn't even appear on the united nations list suggesting its less than 9.2 million... so really we dont ACTUALLY know the populations of ANY city... except tokyo seems to always be top! ...well credit to undefeated Japan in city population!

I think a Metro area extends bigger than we realize. For example, Guangzhou might include nearby Hong Kong. There seems to be inconsistencies (not the Quiz giver's fault). If Tokyo and Yokohama are combined, or NY-Newark area, why not San Diego-Tijuana? amjyamty -- I guess Godzilla was kinder than we realized!

Considering I guessed so many cities that were on just one or two lists, it was typical that all the ones I missed were on all 4!

I think another one of the difficulties that officials have with the Guangzhou census is with the fluctuating population. I've read that up to 1/3 of the city's population is actually not residents, but migrant workers coming in seasonally.

this is a great quiz. It's really interesting to see how much difference the different source records are. Guangzhou certainly is varied. But at least we know what the biggest is!
