I'm going to have to agree with JohnF, airvin0004 and HollywodLeo on this. Frankly, I just don't get the hate for Nickelback.
What makes their songs worse than the monotonous misogyny of AC/DC or the indecipherable lyrics of Metallica or a hundred other metal bands?
Has there been a funnier self-awareness of the excesses of the industry than "Rockstar"? Probably not since Dr. Hook did "Cover of the Rolling Stone"? "Photograph" is a mature look back at times long past. "Gotta Be Somebody" would fit perfectly in the set list of Def Leppard.
What quantitative or qualitatively makes them worse than any other band? Be specific and give examples.
The biggest "sin" they seem to have committed is that they have been extraordinarily successful. They've had two or three albums that have remained in the top half of the Billboard 200 for over 2 years each, in a time where no other rock acts can keep an album in the charts for more than a year.
But there's a reason those albums stay in the chart that long. Radio keeps playing track after track from them. There's gotta be somebody who likes 'em because they keep selling albums in numbers no other rock act comes close to these days.
If you want to say you're bored with Nickelback, fine. I sympathize. Up here in Canada, radio stations are required by law to play Canadian acts 35% of the time. If you think Nickelback is overplayed on US stations, trust me, you're getting off easy.
And I'll bet that in twenty years time, if you go to a high school reunion, and "Too Bad" or "Far Away" or "How You Remind Me" gets played by whatever will be the 2030 equivalent of a DJ, all you haters will be up on the dance floor singing along. |
