what constitutes as 'hot'? This game is aweful

Great concept and well executed. I'm just not really sold on the name. This obviously calls for the inverse (most winter medals with no summer).

Dodsface - As stated in the question a 'hot' country is one that has won 10 or more summer Olympic medals but no winter Olympic medals. Is there a better way to explain that? I thought it was a cute name given all of the hot/cold games that have been appearing on Sporcle. But obviously the name doesn't work. Suggestions for an alternative name?

Thanks, mkgrenwel. I am working on the opposite 'cold' country list and it will appear next week!

Changed the name and explanation slightly - let me know if this is clearer/better. Thanks!

Excellent quiz. Didn't do as well as I would've liked, but I both had a lot of fun and learned a few things. Great job.

Best quiz I've done for a few weeks - challenging but fun. Should be on front page

India's success rate at the Olympics, or lack thereof, is pretty surprising. I suppose the fact that cricket isn't an Olympic sport doesn't help.

Citkeane. Of India's 20 medals 11 have come from men's Field Hockey and they can only win one per Olympiad so their performance is even less impressive.

Lithuania! Nothing like being one of the northernmost countries but having nothing but summer medals to your name.

@citkeane: It's also due to very poor sports infrastructure (except for cricket). Even now India tends to win medals in shooting and wrestling that are less dependent on infrastructure.

@Razorblade, Greece only had 7 people at the Vancouver games. It's hard to field a large team when your winter low is in the mid-'40s.

You would figure that someone from Greece would slide down a ski slope real easy. Or Turkey would gobble up all the gold medals in the Winter Olympics. I'm here all week.

I think it is still the case that not a single South American has ever won an individual medal at the Winter Olympics. You'd think there'd be that one dude from Peru who learned to ski in the Andes and managed a bronze in the Super G in Calgary or something, but no. Not a one.

@ari18 Ireland and the UK only get snow like once or twice a year and the only significantly high mountain range is in the Highlands of Scotland.

I was thrown by the "Olympics quizzes may include nations that don't currently exist but competed in past Olympic Games" hint. I spent way too long guessing former countries that don't exist anymore, only to find that there were none on this quiz.

I don't know that I'd call the winter Olympics "Greece's games." True, they still march out fist, but Greece didn't participate in the Winter Olympics until 1936, and they only had 2 athletes.

Sporcle makes the brain work in mysterious ways. I considered both Vatican City and South Sudan as answers. I did resist trying them...but I thought them nonetheless. I did try Tuvalu though...

matt01 - and even calling the Highlands of Scotland a "significantly high mountain range" is generous

@matt01, diving: I'm from Minnesota originally. We don't have mountains either, but we ski on hills or cross country. I believe in Irish ingenuity, they can figure this one out!

@moviegoer-It becomes even more amazing when you take Argentina and Chile into account, countries that actually have ski resorts, and where olympic skiers go to train when its summer in the northern hemisphere

@mrsiriustab...I love the Olympics. I'm totally all-in on it all the time. I bought the triple cast in 1992. I still have the Beijing opening ceremony on my DVR it was so awesome. I'm not a naysayer. But I thought this ceremony was horrendous. That Franky & Johnny Say Thanks to Tim number was abominable.
Compared to that floor show with the lit boxes going up and down in rhythm that seemed to be computerized but then it turned out that every box was just a chinese person underneath crouching or standing? Seriously, come on over to my house and watch the Beijing ceremony again. You'll change your opinion that London was better.

It`s hard to succeed in skiing, a sport that requires thousands of $ of equipment, in a country where the majority lives below the poverty line. Even if there are snowy mountains. I`m fine with Winter Olympics being so exclusive, though- more medals for Canada.

Moviegoer, fine. Let's have our own different opinions. While there were some impressive moments in China as you mention (and by all means, China's OC was awesome, too), personally, I preferred London's.

Thanks for publishing this, Sporcle! I can't update it anymore but the medal counts need to be adjusted for all of the medals won in London. It won't change the results except for Armenia. Armenia now has 10 summer medals and no winter medals, so it needs to be added. Thanks! Also, looking back at the source I see that "Australasia" competed in 1908 and 1912 and won 12 medals. I know that is not a country, but maybe this should be a (very obscure) bonus?

How can the second most populated country in the world only have 20 summer medals and not even a winter one? A small country like Georgia having almost the same amount of medals than India is unbelieveable, even more provided that Georgia has existed just for 20 years!
