There are eight more non-African countries at the bottom of the source list that have no data, in addition to North Korea and Iraq. Just saying cos I tried a few and was surprised not to see them.

North Korea and Iraq have not been rated by the HDI for a few years already. This is most likely due to the fact that Iraq is in the middle of a war and North Korea is a totalitarian police state, so it's hard to get information on them.

Moldova is a really poor country by European standards, eh? It even makes its neighbour Romania look rich in comparison.

For the ones that are unrated in the source, perhaps include them as bonuses, displayed as eg "North Korea: no data" or something? I see why you can't rank them, but as Catherine_F says, it seems odd not having them included at all.

Has no one from HDI been to Kosovo? I have. It needs to be on here.

Why is it that HDI didn't include so many countries from Oceania on the list?

I actually don't think North Korea would be on this list, even if data were available. As long as you keep to the law, life over there is certainly better than in a lot of other countries! Also, I knew Moldova was poor, but I never imagined it would be worse than Mongolia :S

North Korea would probably be on here, you obviously don't know much about it. It's not just a police state, it's a poverty and famine stricken police state. Also about Kosovo, the HDI did rank it at one point and it scored a .733, not very good but just short of this list. They don't generally include it because of it's political situation.

Nobody really knows much about North Korea as the country is isolated. The last time it was included in the HDI (1998) it ranked at #75. I'm not sure if the situation there really is that precarious as its always described.

@Hamburger: This index seems to focus only on UN members. Kosovo, because of its disputed status, is not a member, hence, no inclusion. Also, Zephos data isn't too surprising - the rest of former Yugoslavia isn't on here either.

I'm really surprised that Indonesia has a higher development ranking than India.

@mr_parcheesi: Indonesia does not have as bad a poverty situation as is depicted in the media. India, on the other hand, has severe poverty, malnutrition, conflict and disease issues which are kept out of the popular imagination of India Shining.

@Karja: When North Korea was rated in 98' it was before the famines. It's been getting worse since the Soviet Union and friends fell, a downward slide.

India is a mass of contradictions. It is booming because it has a large middle/upper class in absolute numbers relative to other countries in the world that are producing and consuming goods, making it an economic powerhouse. However, it has a much larger population of impoverished people, as well.

India is a goddamned mess. China I can see really emerging from it's still lower living standards as well as it's still socially and politically totalitarian system into a highly successful modern working democracy with great living. India I do not.
