I guessed Quito and since it didn't show up I assumed Ecuador had less than 20 million people. Got foiled by Guayaquil

I'm impressed that a certain African country managed to sneak in two with that 20 million constraint.

@johnlk Looks like San Salvador would be the next one. (Would be a good bonus!)

Very nice quiz. Surprised that Sydney and Melbourne didn't work, but Australia seems to have a population of almost 22 million.

I know trying to guess what any source says is a cities population is a mugs game but Santa Cruz, Bolivia should be on here, I think.

Santa Cruz is the largest city in Bolivia, yes, but the metro of La Paz also includes the major city El Alto and that makes it bigger than the metro of Santa Cruz - which nearly made it: 1,710,000

Surprisingly difficult. Mainly because I had never previously considered places like Greece, Hungary, Chile and the Netherlands to be 'small countries'.

Great quiz! I'm not so hot at geography (relative to other Sporclers), but I'm always drawn to the geography quizzes...and this was one of the best "thinkers" of them all. Well done!

I hope I don't come across as a complete jerk for bringing this up, but shouldn't it be "fewer than 20 million" instead of "less than"? I really like the quiz, though. It's a fun one!

@village_person: please no, let's defend "less" from the "fewer" gang.

I got 2 of the 3 non-capitals. When I ran out of time and saw Douala, I knew that would be the most missed.

I just realized that world capitals make up most of my world cities knowledge. Capital of Liechtenstein: Vaduz. Largest City in Africa: I have no clue. There's something wrong there. Need to go over city populations.

Weird that the site says that Haarlem is part of Amsterdam,I'm from Amsterdam and Haarlem is in no way part of Amsterdam..I don't see why it should be, those are 2 whole different cities

@Prodzz: the term 'metro area' is completely different from 'city'. That said, the source doesn't say 'metro area'. It says 'agglomeration'. Shouldn't the quiz use the same terminology as its source? Those aren't completely synonymous terms. Just a thought.

how could Quito not enter the list if it has officially 1,540,000 inhabitants and its direct suburbs conocoto, calderon, llano chico, cumbaya and yaruqui have more than 250,000 together? all the more remote parts of the metro area still not taken into account...
