This quiz shows why so many people have a problem with basketball being an olympic sport... Personally, I'd like to see as many sports as possible though!

Good quiz, but too much time. It gets to the point where you can just guess every country you know.

How could I forget about the unified team?

Add Russia to the men's list. They won the bronze today.

As far as I know the USA couldn't send their best players to the Olympics until 1992 because of the Olympic regulations regarding amateur status. Very impressing that they still won these number of medals. It seems that this year's medallists haven't been added yet.

Second time in a row that I've entered USSR and not Russia.

I don't mean this in a nasty way, but I'd be pretty embarrassed if I was one of the 0.1% that missed USA.

If you add the numbers, there are 18 gold for the men, with just 17 silver and 17 bronze. The women have 10 gold, with just nine for silver and bronze. What gives?

Seems that only the gold medallists of this year have been added so far, not the other ones. I was about to do that, but I cannot change it anymore.

I typed in "unified" and it didn't count it for "unified team"--what gives?

I was able to get Croatia because I randomly remembered a chart of average height among different populations, the the tallest listed were people of the Dinaric Alps- which go through Croatia. That's how I got Yugoslavia, too.

If the average height was the main factor, northern European nations had to be the strongest Basketball nations, quite the opposite is the case. But Croatia and especially Serbia always had good Basketball players (Kukoc, Divac, Radja, Petrovic, Stojakovic...).

@cocky: Men's basketball has been an Olympic sport since the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Women's basketball has only been an Olympic sport since the 1976 Montreal Olympics.

The Unified Team was a team consisted of the former Soviet Republics at the 1992 Olympics. Therefore in my opinion USSR and Unified Team should count as one.

Spain have 3x men's silver (1984, 2008, 2012), and Russia a bronze. France have a women's silver, and France a bronze.
