To avoid any discussion about Greenland belonging to North America or Europe, I decided to make it a bonus answer.

@D3nn1s: in theory, lowest temperatures would be expected in Argentina and not in Chile. Normally very low temperatures are recorded in continental climates, far from the sea. Although Argentinean Patagonia isn't much wide, Chilean Patagonia is narrower and therefore you are always near the sea. But practically it was only a matter of chance. There were no many meteorological stations in Argentinean nor in Chilean Patagonia in 1907. It happened that by chance there was one in the site and measured the -32.8 Celsius.

Interesting that it's Morocco. I was thinking that the Atlas mountains in the north, or maybe some mountains in Kenya would be colder. Never would have thought of Morocco, although I did think of the Kalahari desert countries...Nice quiz.

I clicked the link for Ifrane, Morocco and was amazed. They have a ski resort! I assumed Northern Africa was all warm, but then I remembered there are mountains there.

@Djibouti Yeah, you're right! No wireless electronics back in 1892! @RJMurphy Chile could also be used as hot, given that chile is spice which is hot.

The quiz should note that the North American answer is continental North America excluding Greenland. Greenland's (Denmark) lowest temperature is -87 F (-66c). Perhaps reposting Merijn's archived comment. If Greenland was Canadian instead of Danish would the Greenland temperature be allowed for North America or would it still be a bonus answer?

Oceania should really be New Zealand. Coldest recorded temperature there is -25.6 in 1903.

I think this would be better as a one minute quiz, too much time to guess randomly otherwise, though I never made it around to Morocco.

@JLKeip I agree- too much time. I was randomly guessing southern African countries, then remembered that the desert gats really cold at night, so started guessing Saharan countries, which is how I eventually got Morocco. That process took me about a minute by itself

Australia's climate seems rather pleasant. Their record cold is an average winter day in some places.

There is a lower record for Argentina, -38.2 F (-39.0 C) at Valle de los Patos Superior, a weather station in the Andes with an elevation of 2,880 meters (9,450 feet), on July 17, 1972. This doesn't matter for the quiz, of course.

@ArcticHippo: You're joke is funny - I live in Tanzania and it is hot 24/7/365; not to mention the humidity. But then again, what's the coldest temperature recorded on Kilimanjaro?

@aj_sp0rcle: but if you take the summit of Kilimanjaro as the coldest point in Tanzania, you must take the summit of Aconcagua for Argentina (not to mention Mount McKinley for the US). However, as far as I know no country has thought of putting a weather station in those places only to break a previous lowest temperature record.

Africa is intriguing- I totally whiffed because there are countries farther from the equator with higher mountains. Hmph! Next time I go to Moroco, I'll be sure to bundle up.
