For the "British Empire" answers, "UK, Great Britain, United Kingdom" don't work. I think you should really change that.

neither "British and Italian" nor "Italian and British" work for Somalia

This is a great idea for a quiz and one that is well done overall. Let me humbly suggest that you make the change SoSoSmart suggests and that for each of the countries with two colonial powers that you either (1) accept one for both; (2) make two separate entries; or (3) that you indicate with an asterisk or in some other fashion that there are two colonial powers. Finally, I'm not sure what the reason is for putting these in random order. Alphabetical or chronological order would make more sense.

It would be interesting to put Namibia in here and see whether people know that it declared independence from South Africa. Good quiz.

Namibia was also German Southwest Africa until it was taken control of by South Africa in 1915.

Yeah, I left out Liberia, Western Sahara, Eritrea, Ethiopia and Namibia because its a bit sketchy about how to "classify" them. I guess I'll give them a go though.

Most of them did not "declare independence." I'd suggest changing the wording. Namibia should be "South Africa," though.

I missed all of the "two empires" because I didn't realize you needed to enter both at once until too late; I couldn't figure out why "Spain" wasn't working for Morocco. You might want to indicate that in the directions.

Liberia didn't really gain independence from the United States, it was simply founded by ex-slaves from the US. The US never controlled or occupied or claimed the land.

There's some confusion based on the "declared independence" and "empires" language. Namibia for example was originally German, then British/South African. You're not accepting German for it. The same (or similar) goes for Cameroon, Eritrea, Tanzania, Togo, etc.

@papercrab: I think the key is that the quiz is about which country they gained independance from, and not who historically have controlled them. Good quiz, some were quite difficult. As a bonus, you could include the Netherlands for South Africa because some parts were independant before being conquered by the british (Orange Free State, Transvaal), though it might be arguable that they didn't gain independance from anyone but created their own states).

Good quiz. But ethiopia and south africa aren't empires. The USA did not ever control Liberia. Liberia was always an independent states.

Tanzania didn't gain independence from anyone in 1961 - it was formed as the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar in 1964 (which gained their independence in 1961 and 1963 respectively).

I believe that technically Sudan was an Egyptian-British condominium before 1956, and Egypt was certainly an independent country after 1936, so perhaps Egypt and UK should be the answer there. Of course, we'll soon have to add South Sudan...

@chipmunkdavid: Actually, Ethiopia was an empire as Haile Selassie's title was emperor, although I will grant you that when Eritrea separated from Ethiopia it was no longer a monarchy. Liberia was not always an independent state. It came into existence in 1847. However, you are correct that there was no precursor colony.
