In Lombard it is called Milà, in Milanese it is called Milan. It was founded by Celtic people under the name Medhlan.

Known as Zenza in Ligurian and Genoese, the name probably derives from Latin 'genua' meaning 'knees' or from Celtic 'genawa' for 'mouth' or 'estuary'.
