The Yuan Dynasty was the period when the Mongols ruled China. I find it hard to believe that there were only 3.5 million people as a part of Nazi Germany when the Holocaust is said to have killed 6 million. How could more people have died than existed? This quiz is an interesting idea, but you have no source...

It is measured in squared kilometers, not in population ;)

To Phibbyfan, as Bernhard has pointed out its by land area. How could anyone possibly create a precise list by population? Thats gotta be fairly inaccurate particularly with the older empires. I hope you didn't mark the quiz down because of that.

I can't find the size in area, but I think the German Empire of the pre-WWI period should be large enough to be listed here, combining Germany, Namibia, Tanzania, Togo, Cameroon, Papua, and various Pacific islands and Chinese ports. Could be wrong though.

Thanks for the comments guys. The German empire features number 55 on the list at 3.5 million square kms. Ive added the source now. I'm dead impressed with the person who got 46-50! I had a few surprises when compiling the quiz.

Please accept "Japan" or "Empire of Japan" for "Japanese Empire." Also, this is probably a terminology issue, but why don't the USSR and PRC count as empires, especially considering that the United States is listed? Both control(led) large areas with diverse populations (people not considered Russian or Chinese, like Tibetans or Uzbeks) and have/had strong centralized governments.

Great quiz. Maybe some common alternate spellings should be added -- it should accept "Mogul" for "Mughal", "Il Khan Empire" for "Ilkhanate", and "Umayad" for "Umayyad" for instance.

Cheers Nendwir and Pyrophorus, ill bulk out the accepted phrases this evening. Im not sure about the USSR. Maybe the countries were considored semi-autonomous within the soviet state? Does that define an empire? Anybody found a good definition of an empire? I'm pretty good with my history but had to stick to the source's listing.

Maybe change "Russian Empire" to USSR to be more clear?

Having the following at the top of your link makes one wonder: " This article has multiple issues. Please help improve the article or discuss these issues on the talk page. * It needs additional references or sources for verification. Tagged since March 2009. * Its factual accuracy is disputed. Tagged since March 2009. * It may contain an unpublished synthesis of published material that conveys ideas not verifiable with the given sources. Please help add reliable sources about this topic. Tagged since May 2009. " Intersting idea, but needs a lot of verification first.

Sorry Tever, you're right it might need a little tweaking but for my first go its not the worst quiz is it? I'll have a look to see if i can corraborate them.....at the very least we can probably all agree the British Empire's at the top. I at least know that to be true.

Measuring and comparing world empires Empires are all individual in character, having been formed in widely different times under widely different political structures. The calculation of the land area of a particular empire is controversial. In particular, there is the question of whether a particular empire can be considered to have laid claim to an area that is sparsely populated, or not populated at all. The below lists err on the side of including any land area that was explored and explicitly claimed, even if the areas were very sparsely populated or unpopulated. No claims on mainland Antarctica are included in the area of any of the empires. Due to the historical trend of increasing population and GDP (Gross Domestic Product), the list of largest empires in these categories is highly dependent on which relatively recent political entities are defined as empires. ******************* So I guess from this article and from others I've read that this is still a debatable topic and one dependant on your personal standpoint. If you want something less contraversial you could try my 'Moh's Scale' quiz. I have a degree in geology so I know that's right :)
