Dalglish took over in January 1998. Keegan was the manager through the Champions League campaign at the end of 1997...

Keegan left in January 1997. Newcastle were not in a Champions League place at the time. Dalglish (surprisingly) took the team into second place in May 1997 and so he was the manager at the start of the Champions League campaign in August 1997.
