| @Starstruck: You are factually incorrect. While the seat of government is located within the District of Columbia, the city in which it is located is Washington. It's not just "commonly known as", it IS the city of Washington, located IN the District of Columbia, hence, Washington, D.C.. Originally, the District of Columbia encompassed a square area oriented with the corners facing the four compass points and included land on the south shore of the Potomac and what is now the city of Alexandria, VA. At some point, the Federal government ceded the land south of the river back to Virginia, resulting in the present sized D of C.. So, the seat of U.S. government IS located in the city of WASHINGTON, which just happens to be located within the Federally administered DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, which was created so that the seat of national government would NOT be located in any of the constituent states of the United States, all of which means that the "capital city" of the United States IS Washington! |
