	Portland was ranked #29 so it wasn't too far off but the city proper is "ONLY" 76.04% Democratic and that shockingly isn't enough to crack the top 25.

	This is ridiculous. It is calling votes cast for Democratic candidates "liberal". These cities are simply the cities with the highest proportion of black voters. And interesting quiz would be cities where in exit polling people IDENTIFIED as liberal.

	The reason that only 75% percent of Portland's population is registered Democratic is because there are a lot of people who are TOO liberal for the party. I've been to Flint, Michigan. It's not "liberal". It's just "union". There's a difference.

	I would beg to differ that Paterson, Flint, Oakland, Inglewood, and Gary are considered some of the smartest cities. It's a quiz that is VERY skewed by demographics, but still a fun and interesting quiz. I enjoyed it!

	Sorry, I deleted my comment cause I wanted to try to be impartial given that I wrote a quiz on Most Conservative Cities. Yeah, you could also argue Princeton, Georgetown, Notre Dame, etc are generally more conservative. Data is very amorphous and susceptible to interpretation i suppose.

	I would have liked to see this without the states, and make it a little more challenging. Most of these could be guessed without knowing anything about politics by just naming cities in each state.

	Yeah i considered that but then you would have gotten messages like "Add the states to the list. How were we supposed to get Inglewood?" I originally had the quiz at 3 minutes to make up for the fact that I provided the states but the bell curve suggested the quiz was a bit too hard so I added another minute and the bell curve now shows it might be too easy. It's one of those situations where you just want 3:30 :)

	Notice I said the word "some" in my comment, not "all". And in the 2010 Daily Beast's annual rankings of the smartest cities, Boston, Hartford, New Haven, Oakland, San Francisco, Seattle, Minneapolis, and Washington were all in the top 10.

	These are not necessarily the most liberal. Some, like Cambridge, are actually filled with truly radical leftists. Others, like Detroit, merely have a really active Democratic machine. I'm from MA, and I can attest to the fact that we are not actually as liberal as people think (outside Cambridge and Provincetown, of course); we just have an insanely active Democratic machine, so that more conservative union members and the urban and suburban Irish consistently vote Democratic, despite the fact that they're fairly conservative. The union rank and file and the Irish supported Scott Brown, which is what enabled him to win in January

	If you base it on education, the more educated people tend to vote Democratic. Generally, Democrats win among people with at least a bachelor's degree (see here: http://elections.nytimes.com/2008/results/president/exit-polls.html). Among people with a graduate or professional degree, the rate is even higher (see here: http://www.gallup.com/poll/106381/obama-education-gap-extends-general-election.aspx). This is why the conservative opposition to liberal academia is such a big issue (hell, it launched William F. Buckley's career; his first book, God and Man at Yale, was about that topic)

	@webman33 you are naming people who vote Democratic because Democrats support policies that are advantageous to their groups. That does not make them liberal. The "elite" social class you speak of I believe is the "Hollywood Left". The true upper class who got their money from business are most certainly not liberal (except Soros). DEMOCRATIC DOES NOT EQUAL LIBERAL. That's my message basically.

	It's inaccurate to label cities liberal just because they vote for Democrats. On "social issues," you might be surprised at attitudes in places like Detroit on matters like abortion, stem cell research, and gay rights.

	How the hell did Birmingham end up on this list? I've lived in Birmingham and I'll explain the city dynamics. Basically, the only people who live in the city limits are poor, and to put it frankly, ghetto. Liberals live on the south side of Red Mountain, conservatives (rednecks) live on the north side. It's defined quite clearly. Hmmmm... I still don't understand

	@saban4pres: I've never been to Birmingham, but with nearly 3/4 of residents being African-American, and roughly 90% of black voters regularly voting Democratic, it seems like a fairly obvious correlation.
