You may wish to add: Oman, which lost Zanzibar and other territories; Hungary, which like Austria lost territories in the break-up of Austria-Hungary; Belgium, which lost the Belgian Congo; and Taiwan, which lost all of the mainland.

In addition to carbon_rod's comment, I was surprised not to see Malaysia (which lost Singapore) and Brunei (which lost all of the territory on Borneo, now a part of Malaysia), along with Monaco, which lost 95% of its territory in 1861. Sakhalin is also misspelt.

Thanks for the catches guys. Can't believe I forgot Belgium! Not including Taiwan and Hungary, because neither are/were officially independent. But will add the others.

1. If decolonization counts then what about the independence of PNG from Australia? Or the independence of Namibia from South Africa? 2. If you include federation collapses (El Salvador, Peru etc.) then should Senegambia count? 3. Pretty sure North Korea lost territory as a result of the Korean War - of course, they aren't technically borders per se. 4. If Abkhazia counts as a loss for Georgia, what about Transnistria for Moldova and Nagorno-Karabakh for Azerbaijan?

Technically Papua New Guinea was a British possession administered by Australia. Namibia was never annexed by South Africa, but was for all practical purposes ruled by her and therefore will be added. Senegal is a good add. I thought about North Korea, but I couldn't find good data on the pre-war land area. In any event, the change was very small.

Please accept Vatican as well as Vatican City. I tried Vatican, and when it didn't work, I was ready to suggest it's loss of the papal states. Then I had some time left over, and knew that the 99.99% couldn't be anything else. Great quiz btw :)

Ireland? Or was it already in its current form at independence?

India losing Pakistan ? Libya lost the Aouzou strip to Chad in the 1980s and Mauritania lost its portion of the Western Sahara to Morocco also in the 1980s. I'm sure some places e.g. Maldives have already lost some land to global warming as well..

this is a great quiz but massively complicated and I wouldn't have dared attempt it. syria should mention the loss of the Golan Heights to Israel. Ireland which once had the whole island lost its sovereignty and when regained lost Northern Ireland to the UK. This subject is just so difficult to quantify and i'd love to see a source for this or yours workings. Unfortunately i'm sure there are loads more that have been missed cos the history is so vast and the definition quite ambiguous.great effort though

Both India and Ireland were partitioned at independence, thus are not counted. The boundary disputes in the Sahara are a little questionable, as both are arguably temporary territorial increase during time of war (which the quiz does not consider). Hatay is about 5 times bigger than the Golan, so I mentioned it as the most substantial territorial loss.

As for sources, mostly wikipedia plus googling for maps. Where reliable estimates of the former areas of the countries were available, they were used (generally by summing the area of the successor states or provinces). Otherwise, they were estimated from maps. The numerous missed countries originate from the fact that I was not working from a list, only relying on my own knowledge of history.

Guatemalans would contend that they lost Belize to a British logging company.

Though the battle over Belize was fought prior to Guatemalan independence.
