All this time I thought that #15 and #16 were the same character. They look so much alike. Also I thought it was Lich-king. All in all this is a good quiz. But sad that there is no Bill the pony.

Figwit was a random extra in the movies named by fans, who was called back for several later scenes due to his ridiculous popularity.

Figwit isn't just a random extra, that is Bret from Flight of the Conchords! Think about it, think, think about it!

Gothmog, had no idea his name, but I thought he was cool and that he would be a good villain if he got more film time. Haven't seen the extended edition yet, though. Or the books... But from what I've seen, that's what I think.

@cheesyjon: you won't find Gothmog in the books either... or at least *this* Gothmog. Gothmog was the name of the captain of the Balrogs in the Silmarillion. In LOTR there is no mention of an Orc Captain named Gothmog. I guess he was created for the film to give a face to the Orc army.

@SOAR: The spelling is "Balrog" without the "e" @others: Figwit actually is an acronym for "Frodo is great - who is that?" - no kidding. Other people already said he was an (originally) unnamed extra.

@BCSwede Actually, Gothmog is mentioned in the books (besides the Lord of Balrogs). Gothmog is the Lieutenant of Morgul and is second in command to the Witch-King at the Battle of the Pelannor Fields. Once the WK was slain, Gothmog took over command of Sauron's forces. His species is never mentioned, but the films chose to represent him as an orc and also greatly expanded his role.

Good lord, you're right. I haven't read the books in years and I was just going by memory... which apparently isn't what it used to be!!

One does not simply read this comment without doing so in Boromir's voice.

Overall a good adaptation, but the way Jackson screwed up the Battle of the Pelennor Fields really bugged me. The dead show up and the battle's over? No no no no no!

@HeatMcManus, Jackson had the Army of the Dead in the movie more than Tolkien had them in the book.

Maybe there should be a note that not all of these are characters, but rather general representations of groups in the film. Especially for the last two rows I was trying to remember any individuals named, not realizing that something like "elf" would have been good enough.

Update - a quick google search indicates that 'Figwit' is a fan-generated name. I didn't think the name sounded Elvish.

So, elves name their children things like Glorfindel, Elessar, Luthien, Arwen Undomiel, and... Figwit? Seriously, that poor kid must have gotten made fun of in elf-school worse than Herbie did.

Figwit is an acronym-based name standing for 'Frodo Is Great...Who Is That?!'. Incidentally, the character is played by none other than Bret McKenzie of Flight of the Conchords fame, and his father Peter also appears in this quiz, playing Elendil.

Could you mention in the "about" that some do not have names but are merely races/etc.? Because I knew some of these but didn't guess them because they seemed too obvious. Also - mouth of sauron instead of figwit.

@Meltha: Elessar was a man [Aragorn], not an elf, and did not receive that name from his parents anyway.

I had no idea the random Urak-hai had names. Just goes to show that even malformed, hybrid mud creatures are people too.

For anyone confused FIGWIT stands for Frodo is Great who is That. The character was played by Brett Mackenzie from Flight of the Concords and there was like a fan site around him after the first movie when he was just some random character.

I was impressed that 14% of quiz-takers could name Figwit, but it makes more sense knowing that the quiz also accepts "elf", "Brett Mackenzie," and "Frodo is great- who is that?"

I think it would be great if Ned Stark was accepted for Boromir and Mr. Smith was accepted for Elrond, just for bonus answers.
