iceman: "Red candies were eliminated in 1976[8] due to health concerns over the dye amaranth (FD&C Red #2), which was a suspected carcinogen, and were replaced with orange-colored candies. This was done despite the fact that M&M's did not contain the dye; the action was purely to satisfy worried consumers. Red candies were reintroduced later, but they also kept the orange colored M&M's." -wikipedia Hope that helped.

down with blue m&ms! i think i'm still bitter. i was 11 the summer that they held the contest to decide which color would replace tan. i must have voted for purple a hundred times (the "ballot" postcards were no postage required and i would pick up a handful every time i saw them at the store) and i was so pissed when blue won. ...aaand i'm not sure why i just told that story.

Blue M&Ms still look weird to me. I think it's the shade... the light blue ones at Easter don't bother me.

I've never heard of Tan M&Ms. Kind of a strange color if you ask me.

I liked the tan M&Ms. Stupid blue replaced them. Anyone else remember eating M&Ms before going up to bat? Brown was a single, Yellow a double, Orange a triple and Green was a homerun.

So I says, "Blue M&M, Red M&M... they all wind up the same colour in the end".

@kbelle no, but I do remember the commercials that were based around that.

Is this where I should confess my compulsive habit of eating M&M's in order by color? Probably not. What a fun, quick quiz. Congrats on your first publication MVP!

@SanityLapse The tan ones were my favorite too! Good to know I'm not the only one to ever say that. Way better than blue.

Kinda funny that more people guessed purple than tan, considering most people on this site never saw purple M&Ms.

No joke...My dad's cousin invented the blue M&M in 1995 because she graduated from Penn State and wanted blue and white M&Ms for her wedding.

In 1995, the contest to replace tan M&Ms involved a vote between blue, purple, and pink M&Ms. All three were included in regularly marked packages.

You know what's better than the drop from 7th (92.7%) to least (30%)? Tan M&Ms are better than the solid 62.7% drop.

@kmusheno: I remember that contest! I voted for the blue and so did my friends. No one really cared for a pink M&M so I'm glad that color lost.

I remembered that there was a light brown and a dark brown, but would not have guessed to call it "tan" ... MVP, could you give us any wiggle room here, or did the M&M people specifically refer to that color as "tan"?

How the blazes did so many people manage to guess violet? And fail to guess tan? Very unexpected stats.

@jon88: because you can just put purple in for violet, and purple sounds like a reasonable colour. However, if you don't remember tan and have already guessed brown, you aren't likely to think there would be another brown m&m. Great quiz, btw.

So there I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night.

Of course, they also have "special occasion" colors of white, pink, black, and probably others... And red was probably missing for those years due to some cancer-causing dye scare...

Yeah, I vividly remember the commercials that ran on TV when I was in 4th grade... I remember thinking even then how blue would easily beat pink and purple. (Isn't blue the most common favorite color?) What they DIDN'T tell us is that the winner would replace another color. RIP light brown. I also vividly remember eating the light brown M&Ms. I'm kinda surprised more people didn't get that answer.

I can't believe I don't even remember tan M&Ms. I was 13 in 1995 and I remember the new color contest. I wanted blue to win and blue is still my favorite.
