	@Hawaii is an island in the state of Hawaii. That said, Ethiopia is larger than Egypt.

	@koipen: Here's a link to the island that isn't one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawaii_(island) I expect the author is looking at city limits rather than metro areas (of course, if the author provided a source link that would end the speculation). Yokohama is a gigantic city that often doesn't get recognized because it's thrown in with the Tokyo metropolitan area. @LinuxLinus: Which country is larger depends on what source is cited (which would be a nice reason for the author to cite a source), Ethiopia is larger according to CIA World Factbook, Egypt is larger according to the Official Egyptian population clock. @jakespooky: Indonesia meets any definition of an island you can think of: it has no continental landmass, it is surrounded by water, etc. Australia suffers from being thought of as either a continent or an island (or sometimes both). So it's either the world's largest island or its smallest continent. A link to the source would have addressed which it's being considered here.

	Both Largest Island Countries and Largest U.S. Islands was taken from the World Atlas: http://www.worldatlas.com/aatlas/infopage/islands.htm Per this site, Australia is "widely considered a continental landmass" and thus does not make the list.

	Wikipedia does list Australia first, followed by Indonesia and Madagascar. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_island_countries_by_area

	Egypt and Ethiopia are very close. Most sources list Ethiopia as the most populous. I am revising the question to: "Name the two largest African countries ain area." This is more clear-cut. Five different sources gave me the same answer.

	@tahitiwahini: I've seen other Sporcle quizzes in which an island country is defined as one with no land boundaries, so Indonesia wouldn't qualify as such. (However, it's probable that the great majority of people thinks of Indonesia, the UK or Ireland as island countries in spite of having land boundaries).

	If the only criteria for being an island nation is having a majority of your land area located on islands, Denmark should be over Indonesia. A little thing called Greenland.

	@dancastro: I have't yet run into a quiz (that I remember) which does that although I have heard in other comments the same thing you said: that an island in Sporcle is a country without land borders. In my mind that's a really tortured use of the term island especially since the term does have a rather specific meaning in English, namely: "An island is any piece of sub-continental land that is surrounded by water." -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Island I'm with the great majority of people who regard Indonesia, the UK, and Ireland as island countries. In fact, I really don't understand why someone wouldn't regard any of those as islands. In all three cases I'm willing to concede that the countries in question border other countries. So while all three countries are indisputably islands, they are not countries without land borders. In other words, they are not unbordered, nor are they isolated. Perhaps that's a better way to differentiate between countries. Japan and Papua New Guinea are both island countries; Japan is isolated (having no land borders), while Papua New Guinea is not isolated (bordering Indonesia on the island of New Guinea). It's simply wrong to say that an island country can't have a land border (as long as that land border is not itself part of a continent). If indeed there is a Sporcle convention that considers the UK to not be an island (merely because of the presence of Ireland) than that particular Sporcle convention is misguided and should be challenged.

	Australia is a country consisting of a continent and a number of islands. That does not make it an "island country" even according to Wikipedia, which (in case you hadn't noticed, and I guess you didn't) even has an entry entitled "Australia (continent)." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia_%28continent%29

	@MSUKent: fun quiz! And now that you've listed the sources I have no complaints. Egypt and Ethiopia do appear to be nip-and-tuck in the population race so it was probably wise to switch to area. At least until 9 July 2011 when the independence of South Sudan will knock Sudan out of the top two largest countries in Africa.

MSUKent's link provided above makes it apparent that that's just not the case. How else to explain that Australia is listed as the largest island in the world (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_island_countries_by_area)?

	@tahitiwahini http://www.sporcle.com/games/islandnations.php has been published for quite some time and uses that definition. While I don´t exactly dissagree with the one used here I do believe that all sporcle quizes ought to be consistent and that therefore Indonesia needs to go.

	Sudan is significantly smaller now that South Sudan has declared its independence. Sporcle convention has Australia as a continental landmass, not an island. Also, Sporcle convention wouldn't define Indonesia as an island nation, since it has land borders with other countries. I agree both these things are subject to debate, but regular Sporclers are more accustomed to those conventions being applied.
