I liked it but have trouble with these when the columns aren't alphabatized.

@ambition: Interesting comment. I've seen other games like this and I don't believe they were alphabetized. Not sure if that will make it too easy. Do you mean the first column only or all columns?

@MSUKent and ambition. Ambition is right. When I created this format back in early 2010, I always alphabetized the columns so you could search for specific things and have a logic to finding them. This one was very frustrating because I could start the dog name but not see the next part, so I'd just type it in and be surprised where it showed up. It would be great if you could sort the columns.
Ah here we go. I found the original one I wrote on the subway.

'Sheepdog' isn't a breed, per se, unless it's attached to a specifier like Old English, Shetland, Maremma, etc. The term 'sheepdog' better applies to function, hence Border Collies and Kelpies are certainly sheepdogs.

I thought I could do it just from the first column, but then spelt so many wrong (Papillion, Airdale, Schnauser, Pekinese), I really should have looked at the other two columns for help!

I only knew of the Havanese from this (long, but excellent) Adam Gopnik article: http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2011/08/08/110808fa_fact_gopnik

Too easy. Hardly even looked at Columns 2 and 3. Plus many of them aren't really "dog breeds" either (terrier, sheepdog)

I would just like to point out that as of 12th October 2010, Alsatian is no longer a formal name for the breed German Shepherd, so shouldn't really be up there.

I agree with BonnieH and Sapphire_Hart. Terrier and sheepdog are categories of breeds. (Actually, sheepdog is colloquial; the standard term is herding dog.) Also, "Alsatian" is an awfully old-fashioned and outdated name for the German Shepherd. World War II is long past; it's OK to call them German Shepherds the world over.

I really don't like the different lengths of the segments. Makes it very difficult to focus the eyes!

Some of the ones I tried should become actual breed names.

Harrier would work but doesn't. Perhaps that should be added as a bonus?

Maybe I'm biased due to currently studying in Strasbourg, but I think 'Alsatian' is a better name than 'German Shepherd' anyway, never mind the political implications. More elegant.

I've never heard of a Keeshond, but I googled it and they are adorable.:) And I never knew German Shepherds were called something else. Maybe they called dachshunds "weiner dogs" (people still do anyway lol) and schnauzers "hyper Nazi dogs" during WWII?

Disagree with... someone above; different sized letter groups made this more challenging (at least for a non-dog owner), and with time set just right - time frantically ran out on me with 2 to go.

Anybody else want to type in Airbud when they saw Air in the first column?

Ouch--whiffed on three very common types. Maybe because terrier is sort of a family of dogs, but still shoulda gotten it. Proves I'm a cat person. I saw DOR in final column and kept looking for the parts to make komondor (the dogs with dreadlocks) instead of the much more common lab. That was a true brainfart.
