Cool idea, especially since a lot of them are either late 70s/early 90s with a very "80s" sound. Perhaps consider a different song for "Tainted Love", as the Soft Cell version was from 1981, but was a Gloria Jones cover from 1965, and has also been covered by numerous artists since the 80s, including a single version from Marilyn Manson in 2001.

I noticed the alert after I'd clicked a wrong answer, so I take some responsibility that I didn't read the instructions carefully, though I do prefer it when people put "clickable mines" in brackets in the title.

"I Love Rock 'n Roll" was originally by Arrows, released in 1975

Prince's Nothing Compares 2 U came out in the '80s. Change that option.

leviper: Nothing Compares to U was written by Prince for Sinead O'Connor. It was released as a single in February of 1990 and appeared on her album I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got, which came out in March of 1990.

Nothing Compares 2U is still an 80's song. Sinead released her version in 1990 but it was a cover of a version released by Prince.

Good quiz! Your choices for decoy songs were pretty good. While I understand those who are driving at the Nothing Compares 2 U/Prince thing....it is clearly a song made famous by Sinead O'Connor. I don't think that people think of Prince when they see the title or hear the song.

I wish I could express how 'UNFUN' mine quizzes are, but there's not a word in the English language that can properly express my contempt. That being said, I generally like your quizzes, MSUKent.

See I figured you put Nothing Compares 2 U in there as a trick b/c it actually was an 80's song. For true music fans, you would need to delete that one.

Nothing Compares 2 U was not released by Prince, or The Family, in the 1980s as a single. I think we can assume MSUKent is only considering released singles as the song in question. And even if that doesn't work for some of you, perhaps he'll indulge you by putting a comment into his game notes at the top of the quiz to make that clear.

@Pogues: The instructions doesn't say singles. Since there are so many songs to choose from & it's a mine game, I think that one should be switched out. Especially since he switched out I Love Rock and Roll and Tainted Love even though the 80s versions are better known.

If we're getting technical, Girls Just Want to Have Fun was originally recorded in the 70s, too.

Nothing Compares 2 U originally appeared on a 1985 album by Prince's side project band, The Family. That makes it an 80's song. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Family_(band)

There's one easy way to put this whole - That version of the song came out in... debate. But the artist alongside the song. Then there is no confusion if it's a specific version of the song or when the song was written or who recorded it since.

This is another one of those quizzes where it would be interesting to know what percentage of people chose the wrong answers, as well as the percentage of the right answers. C'mon Sporcle, add that option in!

Thank u, MTV, for helping me get several of these when I was so fascinated by videos that I taped many on my first VCR from the mid-80's. Yes kids there was a time when MTV really did play music videos. And there were VCR's.
