| Oh, and before anyone asks - no, I am NOT a Spurs fan. I was just as surprised as anyone else that Tim Duncan ended up 4th. I tried for a while to "fix" that, but after looking at his career and comparing it to the rest of the top 20, there isn't really anyone I can see that should without a doubt be above him. You could make a really good case for Magic Johnson, but that's about it.
One thing I would like to hear suggestions on, however, is: Horace Grant is 54th. He probably shouldn't be. Try as I might, I can't work him out of there without ruining the system.
Also, a few quick notes: 1.) I used MVP Award Shares rather than MVP's because I wanted to look at MVP caliber seasons. A unanimous MVP is better than an MVP won with 55% of the vote, but losing an MVP with 45% of the vote is still pretty good, too. 2.) I didn't award anything for All-NBA 3rd Teams because I couldn't find an adequate value that didn't skew things too much towards recent players. 3.) Minutes played weren't kept until 1952, so any factor involving win shares before that gets a 0... sorry, George Mikan... 4.) ABA players kind of get screwed here cause I'm not using those stats, but that's on them for picking the wrong horse. 5.) Modern players have the potential to get more playoff win shares than older players since the postseason is longer today, but league expansion considerably hurts their chances of being repeatedly named to All-NBA and All-Star teams, so I feel like it evens out. |
