I like it, but the final answer needs more acceptable alternatives: I started with "phonetic alphabet", and then "NATO phonetic alphabet", and I think just "alphabet", none of which worked.

Yeah it's offically called 'NATO Phonetic Alphabet' so you should accept that as your main answer... even 'Phonetic Alphabet' is more appropriate than NATO alphabet letters... the term 'phonetic alphabet' really is the important part.
