| LookTheSky - Akrotiri and Dhekelia are unique from other military bases in that they are sovereign British land, not land leased or bought from Cyprus as is the case with all other foreign military establishments like the US Guantanamo Bay base in Cuba. While the primary function of the areas is military, that is not their sole function, according to the SBA website around 7,000 Cypriots live in the territories, 60% of the land is privately owned, and only 20% is actually owned by the Ministry of Defense. Also, I think the border is more real than you indicate, it has customs and immigration controls (unlike normal military bases) and residents of the areas are entitled to certain citizenship rights. If you are on Ramstein Air Base then you are in Germany, however if you are in Akrotiri then you are not in the Republic of Cyprus. |
