Just to clarify: 'St' is regarded as 'Saint' for the purposes of this quiz. Also, the capitals of Sri Lanka and Tanzania are set out in the normal Sporcle format, so no whinging! Enjoy!

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that 20 mins is probably not enough time, but it is the maximum allowed! Sorry!

Most sporcle quizzes I've seen have Colombo rather than Kotte, unless they've changed recently.

More recent quizzes have begun to quote Kotte as the capital of Sri Lanka with the exception of the Asia by Capitals quiz, which retains Colombo. All of the quizzes using Kotte accept Colombo as an alternative. It poses a difficult position for this quiz, since bonus answers are not really possible and no one would guess Colombo under K or Kotte under C. The capital of Sri Lanka officially moved to Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte (abbreviated to Kotte) in 1982 (http://www.priu.gov.lk/Parliament/ParliamentHistory.html). I think this quiz has made the right decision - however it would be more correct (but infuriating) to file it under "S"

The problem I find with this quiz is that the Ports are all jumbled. "Porto Novo" should certainly appear after "Port Vila". If the "au" in "Port au Prince" counts then the "of" in "Port of Spain" should count, therefore, "Port of Spain" should be moved above "Port Moresby" and "Port Louis". Alternatively, "Port au Prince" could be moved down two spaces.

Yeah I was struggling with the 'Ports'. Grammatical sense says to omit the 'au' and 'of', and to put all the 'Ports' before the 'Porto'. However, I just decided to go 'literal', so whatever letter comes next after 'Port' decides the order: PortA, PortL, PortM, PortOF, PortON, PortV. I think, like the Sri Lankan capital, whichever way I did it would have been viewed as wrong by some...

I was working on this quiz too, because whenever I did "Alphabetical Countries", the capitals kept popping into my head. Funny, now only countries come to mind... You did a great job on the layout!

I've been obsessed with this quiz, and finally have been able to get them all within the time limit. Only one thing I'd change - Washington should be acceptable without needing the "DC" at the end. The other national capitals have national sub-divisions that they belong to (e.g., Canberra, ACT), but you don't require more then the city name for any other.

perhaps an idea for the kotte/colombo dilemma: make colombo a bonus answer saying something like: 'no longer the capital of sri lanka'. or 'kotte is the capital of sri lanka'.

@montecarlo: Good idea, but I can't work out how to add a bonus answer when you have to put the answers in order.

Some countries have multiple capitals like Bolivia (La Paz & Sucre) and South Africa (Pretoria, Cape Town, & Bloemfontein). Some have multiple capitals TEMPORARILY due to capitals relocating (like Tanzania's moving from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma, Sri Lanka's moving from Colombo to Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, Malaysia's moving from Kuala Lumpur to Putrajaya). Some have secondary capitals for other reasons (Amsterdam is the legal capital of the Netherlands as it's in their constitution, but the Hague is actually the seat of all governmental activity. Also, Cetinje is regarded as a traditional capital of Montenegro since that's what it was a long time ago. Cote d'Ivoire I believe still has some government buildings and embassies in Abidjan and the same is true for Tel Aviv since the United Nations doesn't want their embassies in Jerusalem). It's interesting to read up on.

Great quiz, but I could not find them all in 20 minutes... Maybe it is an idea to cut the quiz in half and do a till l in one quiz and m till z in another quiz, makes it more doable...

Very nice quiz. Try doing this one immediately after doing the countries of the world in alphabetical order. It's tough to go from thinking about countries to capitals.

You still haven't added Juba the capital of South Sudan. It's been since July 13th.

The city is Washington, not Washington, DC. DC (District of Columbia) is the equivalent of the name of a state. You wouldn't require New York, NY for the city of New York.

I second TrueNorth. And for those who may say that adding D.C. avoids confusion with the state of Washington... Is anyone really dumb enough to assume that the entire state of Washington is the capital city of the USA? It's just annoying to require the District.

Ridiculously short time allotted - if you dropped the alphabetical order requirement, it might be possible to finish this quiz in 20 minutes, but I'm not even sure about that. However, it is an excellent quiz topic.

This is a great quiz, and I intend to play it many more times! One minor quibble: I would add my voice to those wanting to see the "D.C." dropped from "Washington."

I can't believe this got published with requiring "D.C." None of the other capitals quizzes require "D.C." If you're going to require it, you should at least be consistent within the quiz & require "Ottawa, Ontario," etc. I'm rating this one orcle.

I think there should be an option to play really difficult games like these without a time limit. I know it will take me all day to dredge all the answers from the depths of my brain, but it would be good to be able to have the satisfaction of eventually finishing, no matter how long it takes.

you need to change Kotte. It is Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte. You get an F for putting in a wrong answer in a quiz
