The San Diego Padres' name is derived from the missions Fr. Junipero Serra built throughout California. San Diego was the first one

Here are some more I think deserve addition: Dodgers: Named so because it was necessary to 'dodge' subway trains as they ran through the Brooklyn streets Giants: Named for the 'giant' skyscrapers of NYC Ravens: Edgar Allan Poe is from Baltimore

I have to quibble with Maple Leafs. Yes its the Canadian flag, but as such, would work in ANY Canadian city, and has nothing to do with the city of Toronto, specifically. And this is totally missing Edmonton Oilers.

I would also add the Boston Celtics-named for the large Irish population in that city

I would argue there are a hell of a lot more. In addition to those above you could argue for....Houston Rockets due to the space program in Houston? New York Mets? New York Islanders? New York Jets as they used to play at Shea Stadium next to La Guardia airport? Miami Dolphins as Florida has a lot of dolphins? Minnesota Vikings due to the large number of people of Scandanavian origin living in Minnesota? Dallas Cowboys and San Antonio Spurs due to Texas's link with Cowboys?...I could go on. Nice idea, but maybe you need to pick some and give the reason, and then we answer with the team name

The Houston Rockets actually began as the San Diego Rockets. Strange huh? Lucky that the name fit in Houston. The Houston Astros were named for the space program as the Rockets came to town a few years later.

This is a good idea, but missing some answers: Orlando Magic are named after the Magic Kingdom; Baltimore Ravens are named for resident E.A. Poe; the Mariners are named for Seattle's location on the Puget Sound. The Lakers were named for their original city, I don't believe they should be on this list. Same for the Jazz. The Texans and Maple Leafs are not so much city as state symbols. If this quiz is fixed it will be great.

Very nice idea, but many inconsistencies. As already posited above, some like Orlando Magic, Boston Celtics and Baltimore Ravens are missing, while some tenuous links are present. I don't think it is right to have team names that no longer relate to their current location, as the quiz title does not indicate that they would be included. Also, I'd say if you include Texans and Maple Leafs, you may as well include Yankees. Don't mean to sound so critical though, do like the idea!

Baltimore Orioles (Maryland State Bird) are another that hasn't been mentioned. Needless to say, this quiz is rather arbitrary.

very nice idea, just hard to know where to draw the line. the Ravens were the first one I thought of. i also think its iffy to include a team like the Diamondbacks. if you include them then you also have to consider teams like the Dolphins, the Rays, and the Seahawks

Also the celtics due to the Boston Irish population. The Mets for metropolis (as in New York City). New Jersey Devils for the Jersey Devils ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jersey_Devil ). Houston Rockets-Houston we have a problem.

The Jazz don't play in New Orleans anymore and there aren't any natural lakes in LA. If you're counting teams that have moved, you need to add the Supersonics. And the Flyers are named because of the large Boeing population that was once there.

Great idea, but the answers are a bit random. Others that should be included are the Baltimore Ravens (named after local man Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven"), Florida Panthers (There is a Florida Panther that is endangered), NJ Devils (The NJ devil lives in the Pine Barrens - or so they say), Miami Heat (Hot weather in Miami), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (pirate history in Tampa), Texas Rangers (after law enforcement), NY Metropolitans (then, the biggest metro area).

Dallas Stars works because Texas is the Lone Star State, though they used to be the Minnesota North Stars, which still could have worked for this quiz maybe? I agree, very arbitrary quiz.

I really the quiz idea and think it could even better. I second a lot of the previously mentioned additions and add Tampa Bay Lightning (Tampa is the lightning strike capital of the US) and LA Angels of Anaheim (LA being the City of Angels). What about adding more, making the "justification" either an optional hint or always there and having to click a box to enter the answer instead of just guessing? Having the justification serve as a hint lets us know it's not an exhaustive list.

Cool idea for a quiz, horribly executed. As others have mentioned based on what your criteria seems to be (including the astros) most sports teams should be included. Very few meet the criteria i THOUGHT you were going for, which is things like the Minnesota Twins being named for the city. The Capitals being named for being in the nations capital. That is related to the city itself, not random things ABOUT the city. And if THAT is the criteria, lots of these need to go and ANGELS of the CITY OF ANGELS need to be added in.
