Nice quiz! It was a little easier than it might have been after researching all the dialog for my quiz, but really fun! "Of Herbs and Stewed Rabbit" gave me a little trouble, because I kept typing "Of Herbs and Stewed Mushrooms"...what I get for being married to a vegetarian.

lol That's too funny! XD I'm sure Sam would have loved it if it was mushrooms, too. XD Uh, yes, to keep this from being a kind of spamming my own quiz comment I will here mention that synopses, foreword, prologue (and the parts thereof) and appendices and indices are all hidden answers.

Many apologies, I just read the notice about needing to put bonus answers at the bottom of the quiz, and have updated all my quizzes that had any elsewhere (including this one) to comply. The statistics should hopefully work properly from now on. Can't tell you how sorry I am. :(

Good quiz! I kept only remembering parts of names, though... very frustrating. Missed the "In" in "In the House of Tom Bombadil".

Great quiz! I had a lot of fun taking it. However, I think "the House of Tom Bombadil" and "the Sign of the Prancing Pony" should be acceptable. :-)

Ugh! I missed "The last debate" and I kept typing "Battle on the fields of Pelennor" haha :) that's a wordy chapter title :) Good quiz though!

How the hell did 17% of quiz takers get all 62 of these? That's insane!
Jun 27th, 2011 at 18:22 GMT
It really isn't that hard. I've only read the books maybe 3 times in my life, but I remembered all the titles. For one thing they're simply very memorable. They're descriptive and they stand out. I know when I'm reading the book I'm aware of the title of the chapter I'm in. Second, many of them are mentioned in the movies. But really it's just easy if you're very familiar with the story and have read the book, since they all follow the plot. You just have to remember what happens at a certain point and then it jogs your memory of the title describing it.

Peter Jackson was clever in how he included some of these in the films.
"A shortcut to what?"

Oh, by the vote I guess I was wrong. This quiz is incredibly hard and anyone who remembers all the chapter titles is a savant or a showoff. And probably an elitist.

@ChicagoRed: I have no idea what the LoTR chapter titles are, but you're right that people should not be angry just because others have better memories of certain things.
Jun 27th, 2011 at 22:29 GMT
@ChicagoRed, no one is angry at you because you know the information--honestly--but the wording of your initial comment does come across like you're trying to make people feel foolish for not doing well. i'm not saying that was your intention, but that's where people's votes are coming from. (not trying to offend; i've got a habit of sounding unintentionally condescending as well, so i can relate.)

Bravo to those who got all of them! We've got some serious LOTR scholars here...

It also helps if you're a fan of the soundtracks. Many of the music titles are also chapter titles, especially in in the top row.

Isn't there a chapter on "How one cannot simply walk into Mordor"?
Jul 5th, 2011 at 16:11 GMT
teh_Dr, that's a quote from the films during the Council of Elrond. I think ChicagoRed has a point. But then I missed 9 of them, I found it moderately hard and I understand how people can find it harder.

I could have sworn there are only three books...

@Cheeselord: The Lord of the Rings is a single work and was always intended as such. Tolkien divided it into six books, but it was the publisher who decided that a set of three volumes would be most successful. (See here: http://www.tolkiensociety.org/tolkien/tale.html.)

"but the wording of your initial comment does come across like you're trying to make people feel foolish" Only to those with poor reading comprehension, IMO. There was nothing the least bit like that in his post. Anyone who took it that way is looking to be offended and is probably intellectually insecure.

ohhhh maaaaan, I spelt half of them wrong so I didn't get them hahaha

In the movie, the "shortcut to mushrooms" was the longest shortcut in the history of Middle-Earth... going through the Old Forest, Bree, Rivendell, Moria, Lothlorien, the Falls of Rauros, Fangorn Forest Rohan, Gondor, the Black Gate, Rohan, the Misty Mountains, Rivendell, Bree, and then back home again.. by which time the mushrooms would all be long gone!
