One thing, James Caan was in The Godfather Part II. True he was only on screen for like two minutes in a flashback but he was credited.
Jan 17th, 2011 at 15:58 GMT
Hard to believe Tom Hanks was only in one Best Picture film ! Same thing for other great names !
Jan 17th, 2011 at 19:38 GMT
Ernest Borgnine was in From Here to Eternity. He was the stockade officer who had a problem with Sinatra's character.
Jan 17th, 2011 at 23:32 GMT
Good quiz and impressive mistake spotters.
Jan 18th, 2011 at 01:44 GMT
I agree with seahearn, Borgnine was in From Here To Eternity. He even makes reference to his part in that film on an episode of The Simpsons.

Thanks for catching those errors. I've replaced them.

Frank Sinatra has a cameo in "Around the World in 80 Days." He's the piano player in the saloon.
Jan 28th, 2011 at 18:18 GMT
^ You're right! I forgot about that.

Bing Crosby has a cameo in The Greatest Show on Earth as a spectator (with Bob Hope).

I very much approve of the John Cazale reference in the blurb.
Feb 20th, 2011 at 05:41 GMT
One of the better sporcle quizzes, really... amazing to see how many were included for what is far from their most celebrated or major roles.
Feb 20th, 2011 at 05:54 GMT
Holy crap, From Here to Eternity is one of my favorite movies and I totally blanked on Burt Lancaster being in it--I just thought about Montgomery Clift & Frank Sinatra--so I didn't guess it. Gahhhh! And frankly, some of these actors only being in one Best Picture is just absurd. Looking at, say, Paul Newman's filmography, you could pick our 4 or 5 other movies that were deserving of winning, and many others in the quiz are the same way. Terrific quiz!

Very sneaky Bill Paxton...very sneaky.
Feb 20th, 2011 at 07:24 GMT
I can't believe I took the time to write out "Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb"... luckily, I remembered George C. Scott's other giant role.
Feb 20th, 2011 at 08:31 GMT
I agree with loving the blurb reference. John Cazale: Short life, amazing filmography. My retro-ness really shows when I get "Gentleman's Agreement" (1947) and miss "Chicago" (2003) LOL
Feb 20th, 2011 at 11:53 GMT
Seen the Ben Affleck & Bill Paxton films - clean forgot they were in them! Doesn't look like I was alone in that.
Feb 20th, 2011 at 12:13 GMT
I don't know what it going on with this site, but I typed in "gone with the wind" about four times and it never accepted it! This just happened with another quiz I did. What am I doing wrong?!!
Feb 20th, 2011 at 12:55 GMT
@tlaz maybe you didn't leave spaces between words? 'the' is ignored so you'd have to type 'gonewithwind' or just 'gone with the wind' with spaces

EXCELLENT quiz, and very surprising! How the hell is Gregory Peck's not To Kill a Mockingbird?!? A pretty big chunk of these seem like apologetic awards that they gave to films with big stars to make up for not awarding them earlier in their careers for their defining roles - like when Denzel Washington got best actor for training day instead of the dozens of better roles he's had. This quiz was so much harder than it looked at first glance...and it didn't help that I spent a solid two minutes trying to come up with Janet Leigh movies for "Vivien Leigh." D'oh!
Feb 20th, 2011 at 13:32 GMT
I like the John Cazale reference. Now it's between The Deer Hunter or Dog Day Afternoon today...
Feb 20th, 2011 at 13:53 GMT
@Davidmon5: To Kill a Mockingbird didn't win the prize in 1962 because of the stiff competition it faced. Lawrence of Arabia won that year.
Feb 20th, 2011 at 14:22 GMT
I'm surprised Gene Kelly's movie wasn't Singing in the Rain. Man, AFI loves that movie--it seems to make every one of their "top 100" lists.
Feb 20th, 2011 at 14:27 GMT
I missed Braveheart. I am ashamed of myself and do not deserve to have a Sporcle account.
Feb 20th, 2011 at 14:42 GMT
Well done! As others have noted, excellent job of picking actors that, once I saw the answers, made me say, HE was in THAT??, e.g., Christopher Lloyd in "Cuckoo's Nest," or Ben Affleck in "Shakespeare." Nice challenge!

Liam Neeson was also briefly in "Gangs of New York"...needs to be removed.
Feb 20th, 2011 at 14:50 GMT
the quiz title doesn't help in telling you what it's about
Feb 20th, 2011 at 14:55 GMT
@Wpark83, Gangs of New York did not win Best Picture
Feb 20th, 2011 at 15:47 GMT
Might have to remove Matt Damon from this list if True Grit somehow wins...which IMO it doesn't deserve to.
Feb 20th, 2011 at 16:11 GMT
What a perfect quiz topic! Lots of "How have they been in only one best picture?" and then of course a few episodes of "They were in an oscar-winning movie?" (I'm looking at you, Affleck.)

bullock was also in blind side (nominated for best picture last year) lancaster was also in field of dreams (nominated for best picture in 1989)
Feb 20th, 2011 at 23:25 GMT
@kabini12: This quiz is for the Best Picture WINNERS, not just for nominations.
Feb 20th, 2011 at 23:37 GMT
ahh laurence of arabia
Feb 20th, 2011 at 23:48 GMT
@kabini12: if this list was just nominations it would be a hell of a lot shorter. you'd have to take out nearly everyone
Feb 21st, 2011 at 02:25 GMT
Wow, voted down by Coen fanboys! And it's a fact that if it wins, Damon will have to come off this list. Calm down killers, I'm not saying it's a bad movie, just not the best one that came out last year. Yeesh.
Feb 21st, 2011 at 15:50 GMT
pete32782: you get voted down on these boards for EVERYTHING. It could have been Coen fans, or maybe someone didn't like the fact that you put three dots in between "wins" and "which" instead of four, or maybe five. Who the hell knows? I swear to God, I've never seen such a group of petty, bitchy whiners as the people on these comment boards. And yes, I know this diatribe will now get slammed down to a -37 or so. Like I give a crap about my average comment score on Sporcle. "Sorry, Mr. Ashman, sir. We can't sell you this car. It's because your Sporcle average on comments is at -8.4!"
Feb 21st, 2011 at 20:56 GMT
Great idea for a quiz and well researched!
Feb 22nd, 2011 at 00:52 GMT
Amazing that for many of these their one Oscar winning film was also their signature film...at least 9 of the first 12 picks on the list. Wonderful quiz, a delight to answer

@ashman: You just said everything I've ever wanted to say since joining Sporcle.
