Very good quiz...it's refreshing to see quizzes like this show up amidst the sea of crap that is the user-contributed area. You might consider reducing the time limit a bit though.

Please accept Dorothy for the Wizard of Oz: needing the last name's a bit much for that.

Wow two 1939 quizzes released the same day! We must be celebrating the 70th anniversary of 1939! One small quibble - all of these events would be headlines in 1939 except the birth of someone who nobody heard of until 24 years later.

WHAT? A 5 year old gave birth?! How is that even possible? And I know absolutely nothing abou comic books but I have had a room full of people yell at me for calling Batman a superhero before since he apparently has no superpowers...if they were right you may want to re-word that, if not please let me know. Great quiz, nice collection of interesting facts.

To be just as pedantic as Betraisefold's friends, a superhero is not necessarily powered, a powered person would simply be a superhuman. Batman's accomplishes heroic actions far more frequently than the average hero (keep in mind, a person stopping one robbery or getting one person out of a burning building generally makes them a "hero") thus making him "super" at being "heroic", therefore "superheroic", therefore a superhero.

Overall quite the good quiz, but I'm really not sure about Oswald's birth as a significant event of 1939. For sure he is a significant person born in that year, but while other events conjure up ideas of news headlines, it's not like somebody who experienced 1939 who died before 1963 has any clue who the heck Lee Harvey Oswald is.

@Kirby: That's funny. However, Chuck Norris was born March 10, 1940. And just so you know, Chuck Norris hunts down anyone who gets his birthdate wrong and roundhouse kicks them in the face. Twice.

Another nit-picky point--clue #5 is kind of inaccurate, since a book does not win a Nobel Prize (which is a "lifetime achievement" award anyway). Besides, the author didn't win the award until 1962...maybe it could be re-worded as "This Pulitzer Prize winner is published by Nobel laureate John Steinbeck," or something like that. Fun quiz overall, though.

I like these kinds of quizzes. I can't help wondering what was so great about LaGuardia that it was voted greatest airport in the world in 1960.

@dav_uz: Really, that isn't a very well researched statement. There are many MLBers from all across the world. Canadians, Japanese, South Koreans, Dominicans, Cubans, Aussies, etc. Maybe you should consider expanding your narrow minded world view.

Wondering if anything about this quiz was changed after some people submitted comments. In particular, where is a "after 3 days" reference in the Oswald clue (as per very first comment posted) and how come entering just last name Gandhi worked for me but not someone else? I agree that a future newsmaker's birth is out of synch with headline making events, but all in all this was a fun quiz!

Apparently getting voted Best Airport in the World in 1960 meant that LaGuardia just rested on its laurels, because it's an utter piece of **** now.

A bit of a nitpick- though the country of Czecnoslovakia was dissolved in 1939, it was not annexed by Nazi Germany. Slovakia was spun off as an independent puppet, while the Czech Republic (minus Sudetenland) was made a protectorate of Germany, but not annexed directly to the country (it would remain thus for the duration of the war). The protectorate was virtually run as part of the Reich, but was not officialy so.
