Very fun etymology quiz! I'd question "didgeridoo" though, it's not actually called that in any Aboriginal language. It's an onomatopoeic word that was made up by European settlers to imitate the sound the instrument makes.

I don't know .... the dictionary says that is origins are from an Aboriginal language of N. Australia... http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/didgeridoo

After making this quiz, I found that ffi released a similar quiz two months before mine. Here it is if anyone is interested: http://www.sporcle.com/games/ffi/loanwords

i think it would be interesting if you gave us the definition and the language of origin and we had to guess the word

it would be better to use more common words. I dont know anyone who would call a buffet a smorgashbord. An to say that we derive our words from theirs is not really correct, American english just used thier words to make the melting pot more melty

Great idea for a quiz, but excise originally derives from a Latin word, not a Dutch one. Why not pick something like bumpkin or Yankee that does come directly from Dutch?

The thing about English is that virtually ALL of its words are foreign. We're a language of thieves.

Nicely done. Got all but "trek." I knew it had to be from some Germanic language, but I forgot about Afrikaans. And I could be wrong, but if it comes from Afrikaans isn't it ultimately derived from Dutch?

Heh, I am Dutch but I missed the Dutch one. "Trek" might be Afrikaans, but I would also accept Dutch for that one. Nice quiz!

I don't think excise should be included; yes, the "tax" sense comes from Dutch, but the "cut out" sense is straight from Latin, which is another option in the quiz.
